This was changed to Balaoo before publication but after the adverts were typeset. Very good bright, tight copy with previous owners name written neatly in ink to front blank endpaper. Some light foxing to a few pages but still generally a nice fresh copy. Publishers red cloth with blind ruled border and gilt lettering to front board. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. A particularly nice copy of this rare title by the Author of The Phantom of the Opera. Originally published in French in 1912, Balaoo is the story of a Monkey who is brought up by a Scientist as a human, Mr. Noel. Illustrated throughout with decorative head and tail pieces plus frontis and fifteen full page plates, each with a plain paper guard. Neat previous owners 3 line inscription (dated 1876) on the half title. Some minor spotting to a few pages but generally a clean and bright copy in the publishers highly decorative green cloth binding with bevelled edged boards. Elaborate gilt and blind stamped decoration and lettering to the front board. The rear board with a blind stamped decorative panel pattern. Spine fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Off white endpapers. All edges gilt. Some bumping to the extremities and the spine a little dulled but overall a very good copy of this pretty book. A classic piece of decorative Victoriana.

Original white paper covered boards with decorative gilt and multi colour decoration to front board. Original glassine wrapper. A fine, bright copy in the publishers original silk pattered paper covered box, with printed label on the front panel. the box has some rubbing and wear but is generally very good indeed and has done a great job of keeping the book protected and in fine condition.

Some foxing to the blank endpapers and to a lesser extent on the first and last couple of pages of text, otherwise clean throughout. Fine attractive early twentieth century binding of full dark green morocco, by Zaehnsdorf of London. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments decorated, ruled and lettered in gilt. Triple gilt ruled border on boards. Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales arms stamped in gilt to the front board. Gilt inner dentelles. Dark green endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine faded to a mellow brown but overall a fine attractive binding.

Raised bands with gilt wavy lines on the spine. The compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Red and green Morocco labels, double ruled and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Gilt inner dentelles. Faint mark to the front board and a crack to the inner front endpaper, but the board is firm and tight and there is no cracking to the leather. Overall a near fine copy of this classic work.

Henry and Co. London. 1893. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Original blue buckram, lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom green cloth slipcase and chemise. Small bookplate to front pastedown, related bibiliographic material pasted to endpapers. Shaw's very scarce first play, published in an edition, according to Laurence, of "not more than 500" copies. It was not an overwhelming bestseller. Shaw wrote to John Lane (quoted in Laurence) that the publisher "never advertised it even once; and the sale, which was only effected by great perseverance & determination on the part of the purchasers, was 150 copies." When the publisher retired in December 1897, they ceded to Shaw 194 sets of unbound sheets, which Shaw claimed to have commissioned Sotheran & Co. to bind for him. The Modern Press. 1886. First separate issue, larger untrimmed variant, inscribed by the author. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). Inscribed by Shaw on the half title page to Frances Noyes Hart; "The Committee refused to accept this statement; and there was a very pretty row about it which is fully described in the preface to the Shewing up of Blanco Posnet. G. Bernard Shaw. London. 3rd Oct. 1931. To Frances Noyes Hart". A fine copy in original blue stiff card wrappers printed in black to upper cover. Housed in a blue vellum chemise which is lettered in gilt, reproducing the exact lettering, even using the same typeface, as the printed front cover. This is then housed in a quarter green morocco slip case with raised bands and gilt rules and lettering to the spine. The slip case is rubbed and worn but has done its job of keeping the booklet and chemise in fine condition. Frances Noyes Hart was an American short story writer. It has the horrible quality of being very like somebody else - I cannot for the life of me remember whom. You should have picked out something more impressive. No intelligent Woman would trust a man with a face like that." A fine clean copy of the book in publishers cloth and the original silver, black and white dustwrapper with portrait illustration of Shaw to front panel, designed by Robert De Graaf. Minor rubbing and a couple of small chips to extremities but overall a very good example indeed. Housed in a grey cloth covered clam-shell case with grey leather label, lettered in gilt.

A fine birght copy in Publisher's original light blue cloth with dark blue blocking and titles and illustration in silver to the upper board and spine. Top edge silver. Complete with the rare original illustrated dustwrapper which has a couple of tiny chips and is just a little toned to the spine. Housed in the publisher's original colour illustrated card slipcase. An excellent, fine copy, the binding clean and square, the contents clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The pictorial slipcase remains firm and intact with a little rubbing to the extremities. An attractive example, uncommon in this complete condition.

A very good bright copy in the publishers green cloth biding with elaborate gilt decoration and lettering to the front board and spine. Colour illustration mounted onto the front board. Some minor offsetting to the blank endpapers from the dustwrapper and a small amount of bleed from the green dye used on the top edge of the text block to the very top of a few leaves, otherwise a lovely clean copy throughout. In the original dustwrapper with a colour plate mounted to the front panel. Thomson from Graham Greene." Publishers dark green cloth bindings with gilt ruling and lettering to the spines and grey endpapers. A fine set of books in very good dustwrappers, designed by Michael Harvey with some toning to the spines and a small amount of rubbing to extremities. Some volumes have a neat previous owner name on the front free endpaper and four of the wrappers nave been neatly price-clipped. A very good set with the added bonus of Greene's signature and inscription in Brighton Rock.
