[Parker Ranch] Patton, George S., Jr. Typed Letter, Signed, to Hartwell Carter, Parker Ranch, Hawaii. 4 April 1938. One page. On Lieutenant Colonel George S. Patton, Jr.'s letterhead, Fort Riley, Kansas. Two hole punch at top, folds, age toning.
Wonderful letter with great content regarding the Parker Ranch. Patton was stationed in Hawaii from 1925 to 1928 and again from 1935 to 1937 and became friendly with the Carters. Carter was the manager of the 500,000 acre Parker Ranch. He purchased a number of horses from the Parker Ranch for himself and his family. At the time of the letter Patton was Director of Instruction at the cavalry school in Fort Riley, Kansas. The letter refers to a horse Patton bought on the Ranch, and mentions that his daughter "Ruth Ellen has been doing very well on the Hawaiian horses in the local horse shows here ...." W. L. Gibson. Texas Border Troubles Report. Brownsville, Texas. 1915. Typed report on 8.5 x 11 in. paper ("legal size") from law office of Frank C. Pierce. 7 pp. Signed. Rust marks from paper clips, stains and light wear. A few pencil corrections.
A detailed first hand investigation into the Texas border troubles, based on "10 or 12 trips along the Texas side of the Rio Grande;" a trip to Monterey, Mexico; and "6 or 7 trips to Matamoros, Mexico" since May of 1914. The vast majority of the report consists of accounts of the events along the border, including robberies, murders, train derailments, etc., and the actions taken against those suspected of undertaking these actions. OCLC shows three holdings (Brown Univ.; UC-Berkeley & BYU-Provo) First line of text: "Hoy digo al gefe del estado mayor general lo que cópio ...." Request that the deserters from military units in Mexico City be sent to the 9th battalion as a punishment. The officers in Mexico City requested their deserters who had been apprehended be returned to their units, but the Ministry of War wants to punish them and increase the forces in the 9th battalion, which was residing in Texas at the time. This document also explains the procedure to follow depending on where the deserter was apprehended, after general D. Vicente Filisola made a query on this matter.

Blue textured cloth over boards, title and decorations stamped in yellow onto upper board and spine. Illustrated endpapers. 335 [5] pp. With a publisher's brochure laid in celebrating the 20th anniversary of Grey being published by Harper. Small rub mark to top of pages, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket.
Warm personal inscription in his characteristic purple ink to Grey's youngest son: "July 12, 1930 / To Loren / with the hope that / he will be a real author / in the same time this / book marks my years / of authorship. / Dad / Zane Grey" His son Loren would have been 15 at the time this book was published. Loren eventually published a number of novels, but after a bit more time than his father hoped here.

OCLC shows two holdings with this title, but these both appear to be later variants (Univ. of Arizona & Ibero-Amer. Instit.) Apparently unrecorded. Broadside with ballad and large print of Death as a skeleton brandishing a bloody knife, surrounded by a crowd of skeletons. Apparently the first printing of this Calavera. See, Tyler, Posada's Mexico p. 268, documenting a 1910 appearance of this fierce calavera in a broadside with the headline "Calaveras del Montón, Número 1."

The game of Lotería, often referred to as "Mexican Bingo" was among the most popular games of chance in Mexico; although it persists until the present day, the game has given a more educational and ludic purpose.

"The race game whose prototype can be traced to ancient Egypt, is commonplace in all western and oriental cultures. The juego de la oca or game of goose, is a type of race game that originated in Florence during the late Sixteenth Century and was introduced in Spain under Phillip II. It may have been brought to Mexico—like card games (amapatolli) and chess (quaah patolli)—by the Spanish conquerors. Posada's version of the game retains the traditional spiral of 63 cells (casillas), along which a player's men move with a throw of the dice. OCLC shows no holdings. No holdings at the Online Archive at California. There are copies at The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art; at The Andrés Blaisten Collection and at the Mexican Ministry of Culture (later variant without the 1898 date). It is listed in Casillas, Juegos y Diversiones de Posada (2013). This is a type of Goose game, where players threw the dice to reach the bullring. "[It] is a board for a board game. It consists of an oval divided into 32 squares that narrate, step by step, what happened in a bullfight. The image that occupies the center of the board shows people arriving and entering the square.
