Description:
On board the Euterpe: January 5, 1865, 1865. Unbound. Lightly soiled with some doodling at the upper corner of the first page. In this letter, Goddard expresses heartfelt sorrow to "Eva" that he would not be able to take leave for a visit. The reason he explains as follows: "We landed from our Williamsburg expedition on New Years day and went into camp. I immediately made application for a leave of absence but before it could get through the proper channels we were ordered to reimbark for a second expedition so I shall have to wait a while longer. It is supposed that our destination is Wilmington again and I hope this time with better success than before. It is very probable that some weeks may elapse ere I have an opertunity to send you another letter. Meantime you may hear of hard fighting but do not enable yourself unhappy by worrying yourself about me. Remember that there are not one fourth so many killed in battle as is general supposed. If it be my fate to fall it is my desire that you… Read more

Description:
1930. Stereoview. Very Good. Homemade stereoview. Grimm was an early 20th century collector of Native American artifacts and a National Councilor for the Indian Confederation of America and the Indian Association of America. This card was passed through relatives to its last owner, Robert Panchison. In the photograph, Grimm has inserted an image of his face and headdress into a group photograph of American Indian chiefs. The photos have been mounted on a Keystone stereoview card and the reverse annotated, "3rd man is Cousin Clarence who lived with these Indians for a long time."

Description:
New York: Charles Gulden, 1908. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This colorful letter from Gulden's Mustard contains a mimeographed notice (signed in print by Charles Gulden) informing stores the company has obtained a temporary injunction against a rival firm to prevent the sale of Chance & Son's "Don Caesar" olives, whose name and packaging was quite similar to Gulden's "Don Carlos" brand. The multi-color letterhead features a jar of Gulden's Mustard with its famous marketing spoon and two gold medals that had been awarded to the company. The illustrated advertising envelope features the same illustration in black and white. It is franked with a 2-cent red Washington stamp (Scott #309), tied with a New York machine postmark. Apparently, the cover was first mailed without a stamp as it was applied over an earlier postmark, and an additional circular red handstamp reads, "Held for Postage S." All in nice shape. Guilden's, known for its spicy brown mustard, is the oldest continuously operating and… Read more
