Undated. 2¼ x 3½ inches, black edges, remains of small hinges, in good condition. Louis Gallait (1810 – 1887), Belgian painter. Among his greater works may be named The Last Honors paid to Counts Egmont and Horn by the Corporations of the Town of Brussels, now at Tournai; The Death of Egmont, in the Berlin gallery; the Coronation of Baudouin, Emperor of Constantinople, painted for Versailles; The Temptation of St Anthony, in the palace at Brussels; The Siege of Antioch, Art and Liberty, Portrait of M. B. Dumortier and The Plague at Tournay, all in the Brussels gallery. A Gipsy Woman and her Children was painted in 1852. He also served as the director and president of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts.

Camp de Chalons, 3 August 1882. In French. 1 page 10 x 8 inches, tipped on to an old album page, in good condition. Gaston Alexandre Auguste, Marquis de Galliffet, Prince de Martignes (1830-1909), French general, known for his action in the suppression of the 1871 Paris Commune.

Sergeants Inn, 16 November 1836. 2 pp., 7 x 4 inches, residue of mount at upper edge, in good condition. Thomas Galloway (1796-1851), Scottish mathematician, author.

Radzor House, Droitwich, 14 October 1866. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition (one hole in the second leaf where formerly mounted). With a separate magazine portrait. Sir Douglas Strutt Galton (1822-1899), scientist, interested in submarine telegraphy, sanitary science, the higher education of women, and much else.

Paris, 18 March 1843. In French. 2 pp. 6 x 3½ inches. Garcin de Tassy (1794-1878), French orientalist, studied the Hindi language. His works include Mémoires sur les particularités de la religion musulmane dans l'Inde (1832); Les aventures de Kamrup (translation, 1834); translations of works by the poet Wali (1834); the Histoire de la littérature hindoue e hindoustani (2. Ed. 1871, 3 Vols.); Rudiments de la langue hindouie (1847); Rhétorique et prosodie des langues de l'Orient musulman (1848, 2. Ed. 1873); Chrestomathie hindie et hindouie (1849); La doctrine de l'amour (translation from Hindi, 1859); Cours d'hindoustani (1870) and La langue et la littérature hindoustanies 1850-69 (2. Ed. 1874).

Undated. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, upper edge lightly browned, one margin ragged with loss of two letters only, otherwise sound. A reference to the cosmopolitan salon hostess Madame Mohl (Mary Elizabeth Clarke, 1793-1883) by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865), author of Cranford (1853), North and South (1855) and other novels. “Do you know that we planned a very bold thing last night? Which was no less than asking you and Mrs. Hall if you would drink tea with us on Saturday Evening at seven o’clock? By daylight we begin to be a little afraid of our presumption; but if you will kindly excuse the deficiencies of lodgings and consent to come to us, we will try to get M. & Mme. Mohl, and Count Jennison to meet you. With kindest regards, believe me ever yours truly, E.C.Gaskell.”

Camberwell, undated. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Henry Gastineau (1790-1876), landscape painter, art teacher, and friend of J.M.W.Turner. He was a regular contributor of drawings to topographical publications. These included eighteen subjects for T. K. Cromwell's Excursions in the County of Kent (1822), thirteen scenes for W. H. Ireland's History of Kent (4 vols., 1829–30), numerous views for Jones & Co.'s Wales Illustrated in a Series of Views (2 vols., 1830–31), and, as late as 1860, he contributed nineteen works to John Tillotson's Picturesque Scenery in Wales.

Undated [c.1840-50?]. 15 lines in French, 1 page 6.5 x 4 inches, in good condition. Auguste Michel Gaudichot-Masson (b.1800), dancer at the théâtre Montholon, prolific author of plays and romances.

Milan, undated. In French. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, fine. Charles-Théophile Gaudin (1822-1866), Swiss paleontologist known for his research in the field of paleobotany. He studied theology in Lausanne, afterwards spending several years in England as tutor to the family of Lord Ashley. He then returned to Switzerland, where he concentrated on paleontological studies. In 1854 he began work as a tutor to Gabriel de Rumine, the son of Catherine de Rumine, with whom he founded the Musée industriel de Lausanne in 1862.

Dated 1865. 3 lines on part album page 5 x 9 inches. Alessandro Gavazzi (1809-89), former monk, evangelical convert, Italian patriot and head of the Italian protestants in London, army chaplain with Garibaldi (1860). From an albun compiled by Leone Levi (1821–1888), jurist, political economist, and statistician, author of the History of British Commerce (1872).

2 August 1845. In Italian. 1 page 11 x 8 inches, in good condition, with address leaf. Giuseppe Gazzeri ( 1771-1847 ), Italian chemist.

27 Trafalgar Square, Chelsea, 30 March 1892. 3½ pages, 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition, with the original envelope. E.Edward Geflowski, Polish sculptor who worked in England.

Dated by the Comtesse de Brady, Paris, 31 March 1830. In French, identified beneath by the Comtesse de Brady, and annotated ‘By Dr Spurzheim’ who might have conveyed this note. Stephanie Félicité, Comtesse de Genlis (1746-1830), celebrated French novelist, governess to the children of the Duc d'Orléans, amongst whom was the future king of the French, Louis-Philippe. Her works amount to about 90 vols., among them the celebrated “Mémoirs” of her life and times.

Redroofs, Streatham Common, 6 March 1896. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine, with the original envelope. Sir Ernest George RA (1839 –1922), architect, landscape and architectural watercolourist, and etcher. “My judges are experts & must be aware of the various blunders & shortcomings in work that has been done with an honest intent and with pleasure in the doing.”

Given at Our Court at Windsor Castle, 2 January 1826. 5 pp. 12 x 8 inches, tied by blue ribbon, Royal wafer seal affixed. In superb condition. Light horizontal folds. King George IV (reigned 1820-1830). Sir Charles Stuart (1779-1845), diplomat, who was of great service to the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War, had a second term as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil in 1825-26. The King appoints Stuart and Chamberlain as “Our undoubted Commissioners, Procurators and Plenipotentiaries”. Stuart was already Envoy to Brazil for King John VI of Portugal and has signed the Treaty recognising the independence of Brazil on 19 August 1825. George Canning (1770-1827), Prime Minister from April 1827, signs as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

8 October 1938. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, light traces of mounting. William Alexander Gerhardie or Gerhardi (21 November 1895 – 15 July 1977) was a British (Anglo-Russian) novelist and playwright.

Berlin, February 1820. In German. Each slip about 4 x 5 inches, very fine, all enclosed within a red morocco box, borders gilt, upper cover initalled L.J. in gilt, spine labelled ERINNERUNG.[Memory], marbled wrapper. Liber Amicorum: ‘book of friends’, an early form of autograph book, originating in Germany in the 16th century. This is an early nineteenth century equivalent, comprising slips of paper contained in a morocco box. Noted signatures include Joseph Moses, F.Wercker, Theodor Borchardt, Jacob Berend Cohen, Philippine and Caroline Jaffe, Emma Hirsch, M.Lehmann.
