Original blue cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped designs. The Second and more sought after edition and a highpoint of Victorian publishers' bindings. The binder's ticket 'Bound by Burn & Co' to the rear. Gilchrist was Blake's first full-scale biographer. The work was unfinished when he died; his wife Anne helped to complete the Life, with help from Dante Gabriel Rossetti who wrote the final chapter from Gilchrist's notes, and his brother William Michael Rossetti -- also A.C. Swinburne whose own book on Blake was the result of his researches when reviewing Gilchrist's book. Also of interest are the prints (found in all copies) - three from electrotypes of Blake's Virgil woodcuts, and 17 from electrotypes of the Songs of Innocence and of Experience.( Bentley, Blake Books, 1680B). Description:
The First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz, London in 1932. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The publisher's original black cloth with gilt titling. The text-block is slightly spotted. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little chopped and creased at the edges, a few small closed tears with a little toning to the spine and folds. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. An aspiring human epic; Jews live on one side and Magnolia Street, Doomington (widely held to be an an analogue for Hightown, Manchester) and gentiles on the other. Published the same year as his 'Letter to Adolf Hitler', Golding's vision is one of bustling harmony. The cast of characters is enormous and lively, but presented with depth and nuance (Storm Jameson called it 'a vivid, eager care). He does not make a laudable political point, he creates a living breathing community. Very scarce with the wrapper. Ashton Rare Books… Read More

Description:
The First UK printing published by Cassell, London in 1939. The BOOK is in Very Good ++ condition. Original two-colour printed paper boards are lightly marked. The spine is missing as invariably is the case with this title due to the restrictions on quality of war time production. The boards are however firmly attached and the book is tight. Free from inscriptions and the pages are clean. Frontispiece, title-page, xvi ~+ 51 pages, with all 14 other illustrations (including one double-page spread) in very good condition. The Ardizzone illustrations, printed at the Curwen Press in stunning chromolithography, retain their vitality. Among the named pubs illustrated are the 'Spread Eagle' in Thame, the 'Warrington' in Maida Vale, the 'Red Lion' at Barnes, the 'Goat' just off Bond Street. The text, together with the 'Glossary of Terms' commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. A very rare title to find in any collectable… Read More

An Erni line drawing decoration in gilt to the upper board and the original acetate jacket is present. Hans Erni has penned a drawing of a female head to the half-title which he has signed and also inscribed and dated '3.10.78'. I am unable to decipher the complete inscription but it appears the inscribee was 'Peggy'.
