Description:
Accra, [Ghana]: Liberty Press Limited, 1971. Pictorial broadside, 20 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Lithograph mounted to board. Mild rubbing and toning and moderate warping; 3/4-inch abrasion from apparent sticker removal in lower-left corner, affecting border. Good to very good. A visual guide to the symbolism of the Ghanaian linguist's staff, showing and describing 30 different finial motifs. In traditional Akan societies, linguists are the most important non-royal court officials, serving mixed roles as counselors, ambassadors, legal experts, and historians. Every linguist (okyeame) carries a wooden staff (okyeame poma), topped with a carved finial of a symbolic figure. "The symbol he carries is the symbol (usually proverbial) of the state he represents. Some depict animal or human forms while others depict just simple abstract forms. Whatever stands on that staff or stick represents the beliefs and aspirations of the entire state or clan. The staff itself is made of wood wrapped with either silver or gold… Read More

Edward Gorey's spoof - and near-verbatim recreation - of plates and captions in L. H. Bailey's 1910 MANUAL OF GARDENING : A PRACTICAL GUIDE ... . In BORN TO BE POSTHUMOUS : THE ECCENTRIC LIFE AND MYSTERIOUS GENIUS OF EDWARD GOREY, Mark Dery relates that Gorey was first introduced to Bailey's MANUAL by Judith Cressy of Parnassus Book Service near Gorey's home on Cape Cod. [New York]: The Fantod Press, 1992. First Separate Edition. 5 1/8 inches. 2 volumes. Both volumes [16] ff., including, after the title page, one illustrated phrase on each leaf, printed on rectos only, plus colophon on rear wrapper recto. Original color pictorial wrappers, stapled, in original printed envelope. Numbered and signed by the artist on the colophons. Envelope light scuffed and toned. Fine in a near fine envelope. Number 414 of a limited edition of 500 copies numbered and signed by the artist. The first publication in book form of two works both bearing the credit, "Englished anonymously from the Conton Dialect (1930) and illustrated by Edward Gorey." The book referred to is a real one: SELECT PHRASES IN THE CONTON DIALECT COMPILED (Canton, China: [s.n.], 1930), a now-scarce 54-page guide to Cantonese words and phrases for speakers of English, from which apparently all of the phrases in the present two works are drawn. It is one of Gorey's most elaborate later pieces, containing balloons, bangles, a beach pail, a bodysuit, platform shoes, canvas sneakers, skis, gender nonconformity, near nudity, a ballerina in bat wings, a child with a dog aloft on a leash, a widow in a veil, and other characters perched around the letters, "B-L-A-C-K," with a young woman at the center in the eponymous outfit.

Description:
[1996]. Watercolor and ink on paper. First two images approximately 3 1/3 x 7 2/3 inches, sheets 5 x 10 inches; third image approximately 2 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches, sheet 4 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches. Traces of graphite guide lines; graphite inscriptions, L and R, on first and second sheets, respectively. Colored illustrations for Peter L. Bernsteins article, "The New Religion of Risk Management," in the March-April 1996 issue of HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW. The first two images show Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat bearing lighted torches, as figures of "old religion" walk off into the night. The third shows the same Enlightenment thinkers behind three painted wheels inscribed with "3," "7," and "9." Responding to a question of how fairly to divide money wagered on an interrupted game of dice, Pascal and Fermat together solved an old mathematical puzzle, laying the foundation of probability theory. But today, Bernstein asks, "Have we replaced old-world superstitions with a dangerous reliance on numbers?"
