[Sweden - various places: various, 1889. Five works bound together, all FIRST EDITIONS. Henrik Gahn (1820-1874) invented the first antiseptics to be used in Sweden, which he called "Aseptin" and "Amykos", the first being a secret preparation containing boric acid, used for preserving articles of food, which he patented in 1869; the second for use as a mouthwash and disinfectant. The eponymous firm based on his work, Henrik Gahn AB of Uppsala, stayed in family ownership until 1949, and in some form still exists today. The first pamphlet is inscribed by Gahn to J.G. Winnberg (1824-1899) owner of a village drugstore in Leksand, Sweden, who moved to America and practiced pharmacy in Jamestown, NY. Rare. New York: Crown Publishers, 1949. Octavo (21.5 x 14.5 cm.), xii, 292 pages. FIRST EDITION. The author bills this as "a lifetime of good eating from the world's greatest lovers of fine cooking, ... tycoons, editors, authors, artists, restaurateurs and cordon bleus..." This book is, in fact, all that and more. Only Crosby Gaige could have assembled this Who's Who of American culinary and society figures of the moment: Helen Evans Brown, Marcus Crahan, Dione Lucas, Madame Prunier, Rene Black and so many more. For each he provides a few sentences of introduction, so the book serves as a good reference beyond the dishes. In bright red cloth, with a touch of age toning to the text block. A bit of darkening to the spine of the red and blur printed cream color just jacket, but the colors remain bright and unfaded; small closed tear to rear panel. New York: M. Barrows and Co, 1944. Small octavo, 128 pages. Second printing. A simple listing of cocktail recipes, with a little extra advice on stocking a bar, and correct glassware usage. Not the full package, like the author's other drinks book; the Cocktail Guide and Ladies' Companion was not just a guide, but "a wise and witty discussion of the philosophy of drinking." But this one covers the basics, and it's still written by one of the great bon vivants of the 20th century. This title was also issued in a spiral binding with printed card covers, but this is the cloth issue with dust jacket, and handsomer as a result. clean, near fine copy in printed pale red cloth, in a lightly edgeworn dust jacket.

Springfield, Mass: The King-Richardson Publishing Company, 1897. Large octavo, 636 pages. Index. Glossary. Illustrated with engravings throughout the text, and with three chromolithographed manikins, 'Manikin of the Horse', 'Manikin of the Knee, Fetlock and Ankle of the Horse', and 'Manikin of the Cow', each created by the author for this book. The work contains chapters on cows, horses, swine, poultry as well as crops such as potatoes and fruit, and a selection of Standard Receipts, which range from the veterinary to the household to the culinary. As is usual for this work the textblock is shaken, with one or two leaves pulling loose and edgeworn. Age-toning throughout; a bit of light foxing to the manikins, but all three remain sound, complete and clean. Hinges started. In publisher's black-titled and -bordered tan cloth. Good. Additional veterinary ephemera laid-in.

Cleveland: Tho. Brown, Publisher, Ohio Farmer Office; Frank Pinkerton, Plain & Decorative Printer, 1857. Octavo (22 x 14.5 cm.), 142, [2] pages. Illustrated with four wood engraved plates and additional wood engravings in the text. Publisher's advertisements at end. FIRST EDITION. The first book published in the U.S. on aquaculture. By "Theodatus Garlick, giving the author's first experiments contained in a paper read before the Cleveland Academy of Natural Science. Also directions for the most successful modes of angling for such kinds of fish as are herein described." (from the title page). Garlick's work spanned careers as varied as stone mason, blacksmith, surgeon and medical inventor. ~ Some spotting throughout; ink annotation to foot of Contents page. In green-brown publisher's cloth, blind-stamped with a bass. Spine has several chips lacking. A good copy. [DAB VII, pages 152-153; Tucher, Natural History 288].

Wien [Vienna, Austria]: Carl Gerold, 1824. Octavo (19 x 12 cm.), 608 pages. Lacking the frontispiece and two additional engravings. An early edition of one of the most popular of Viennese cookbooks, the original date of issue of which has yet to be determined. Contains sixteen hundred nineteen recipes, as well as rules for kitchen management. According to Cagle, the earliest edition recorded is the second, Steyr, 1740. Some soiling throughout, in later black cloth. With the bookplate and pencil ownership inscription of hotelier and collector Ferdinand Sperl. Scarce. [OCLC locates just one copy of this edition; Cagle 3, 4 (other editions); Weiss 1179].

A gastronomical history of La Belle Epoque (1870-1940), from the creators of the famous restaurant rating guide. Illustrated throughout with historical photographs and images of contemporary ephemera. Fine in publisher's illustrated boards; no dust jacket as issued. Inscribed by author Christian Millau on the page facing the title, "Pour Carl Sontheimer, ces quelques reflets d'une époque qui ne pouvait etre heureuse, pui qu'elle ne connaisait pas Cuisinart! Aux mon amitie." Sontheimer was the creator of Cuisinart and a culinary book collector of significance. Remarkably scarce in the market place. [OCLC locates three copies (none in the U.S.)].

Promotes the Mudge Patent Canner, a household canning processor that "does away with the stewing kettle" and is "the cheapest, most efficacious and economical system of putting up high-standard goods that has ever been invented." The Boston Cooking School Magazine reviewed the device saying, "a great point in its favor is that, by the use of the canner, fruit or vegetables are not subjected to long cooking, and thus flavor, color and form are preserved. Another consideration is that, by this process, no dishes are required, as the fruit to be 'put up' is put at once into the jars..." Stapled in green wrappers. Fine. Unrecorded. The first book published by the The Herb Grower Press, a project of Gertrude and Philip Foster, founders of The Herb Grower Magazine, which started two years before this publication. Some age-toning, Dark green patterned cloth, gilt-titled on the front board. In the yellow dust jacket, titled and decorated in red and green. Small stains on the rear panel of the dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the free front endpaper, "Best wishes to a Gourmet, Isabella Gaylord, November, 1949". And with the ExLibris of "Ethel Cummings"

[Northampton, Massachusetts: Printed for The Smith College Museum of Art at the Gehenna Press, 1962. Keepsake no. 5 of the Press. Octavo sewn in green, printed wrappers (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), [14]. Title page printed in black, green, and red. FIRST EDITION, publisher's "overprint" issue, limited to 250 copies printed for patrons and friends of the press; from a total edition of 750. Laid-in is a small printed statement from Press, stating that "Smith College Museum of Art has permitted us to overprint 250 copies of this keepsake... [for] our patrons and... our friends". Text consists of a letter from Browne to Evelyn on the use of plants for crowns and garlands by the ancient Greeks and other cultures, with reference to Philostratus, Theophrastus, Pliny, Pollux, and Athenaeus. Browne divides the crowns and garlands into three categories: gestatory, portatory, pensile or suspensory, and - finally - depository. A list of forty-four plants used as crowns or garlands forms part of the letter. [Baskin 30; Brook 31].

A promotional cocktail book, with recipes as well, from the oldest restaurant in Florida, and one of the oldest and largest Spanish/Cuban restaurants in America. A tip of the hat is given to the bartender, "Genial" Tony, who is indicated as the compiler. A single illustration, of a woman raising a glass, is signed by the illustrator in the print, "Com Cut". The cocktail recipes include a Napoleon "Columbia", Jack Rose, Caribe, Orange Blossom, Conchita "Columbia", Abbey Cocktail, Gin Ricky, Absinthe Frappe, Bull-Dog, Daiquiri Cocktail (Real), Presidente Cocktail, Dry Martine Cocktail, Oriente, Seventh Heaven, and others. Illustrated advertisements interspersed. An engaging promotional cookbook for George W. Flint & Co., a Hartford-based-based household furnishings supplier. The ninety or so recipes found here are indeed "every-day", although Breeze Pudding and Hickory Nut Macaroons at the very least evoke something of an era. What grabs attention, rather, are engravings of the sort that might have been seen in the British weekly Punch, including a set of caricatures designed to show the metamorphosis of a curmudgeon into a happy hysteric - a result of a satisfactory purchase from Flint & Co., no doubt. There are, too, intricate commercial images - a rattan baby carriage; a parlor chair with silk fabric. Yenetchi & Co. a Boston-based wine and liquor distributor, successor to Tbe Old House of Ralph Smith & Co. Contains price lists for whiskies (bourbon, rye, sour mash), gins, rums, brandies, sherry, wines, ales and porters, vinegar and other miscellaneous case goods, as well as preselected assortments of household liquors for family use. Testimony from The Boston Budget as to the trustworthiness of Yenetchi & Co. In publisher's illustrated pink wrappers. Fine. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies].

Paris: Berger-Levrault et Cie., Editeurs, 1877. Large octavo (25 x 16.5 cm.), vi, 362 pages. Second edition. A remarkable historical and archaeological study of food in Alsace. The 1862 original edition published in Colmar by Decker is very rare. Oberlé states "this new edition is the most sought after" (Oberlé 516). A few of dog ears to a some pages, and some light foxing, otherwise very good, in publisher's original printed wrappers, with edgewear and some of the wrapper's spine panel perished. Still a good copy, whole and not unattractive. In custom clamshell box.[OCLC locates thirty copies; Maggs 503; Oberlé 516; Vicaire 401].

The Newcomen Society of North America was chartered in 1961, following the earlier establishment in 1923 of the Newcomen Society in England. The focus is on "material history, as distinguished from political history". This includes education, business, banking, railroads, utilities, insurance, & other enterprises contributing to the progress of society. Some oxidation to staples, and a bit of age-toning to edges of wrappers, otherwise fine.

Liebemuehl, Prussia, 1853. Octavo (20.5 x 17 cm.), 140 pages. Text in German, in one neat hand. A cookery book created for Matilde Lehmann of Milomlyn, Poland, formally Liebemuehl in the Province of Prussia. Contains two hundred eighty-six food recipes scaled for household use and partially indexed at the front. Written in narrative form, the recipes include a wide variety of desserts such as puddings, cakes, and torts as well as instructions for various dumplings and soups. The majority of recipes are annotated in red ink with either a backslash, X, or circle. Catchwords are also consistent throughout text. Title page is inscribed in blue ink with the name Jeanette Danielowski. Along edge of page eighty-four appears "R. Danielowski 1860 Auguste Lehmann 186[0?]" It is probable that this cookbook emigrated from Prussia to the United States. Immigration records show a Matilde Lehmann arriving to the US in 1886 circa age forty-one to forty-seven. Genealogical records indicate an Auguste (born in 1836)… Read More
