Description:
Coloniae Allobrogum Sumptibus Societatis. 1709. FIRST EDITION. 4to, 212 x 127 mms., pp.[xvi], 552, 653 - 668, title-page in red and black with"E. Libris Rd. Hamilton" on the top margin, recently rebound in half dark brown calf, morocco label, marbled boards; title-page a bit soiled, but a good copy. The attribution of authorship to Gabriel or John Cramer is found in Alexander Chalmers' General Biographical Dictionary. Compilations of this sort, consisting of alchemy, medicine, folk remedies, magic, probably haven't lost their popularity over the ages, with the emphasis often on magic and secrecy. This one promises to examine the whole human body, with reference to the treatment of internal and external diseases. The empirical medical researchers in the 17th century in Britain, such as Harvey and Descartes, were moving away from chemical and spagiric treatments of illness. but quack handbooks did not lose their popularity.

London: Printed for Henry Colburn, Public Library..., 1816. Large 12mo, 190 x 112 mms., pp. [vi adverts and blank leaf], xi [xii blank]. 228, engraved plate opposite page 89, uncut and and mostly unopened, original grey boards, cream spine, paper label; corners slightly crushed, some slight wear to upper front joint, but a very good copy of a book as issued in boards by, presumably, the publisher. Georg Joseph Beer, 1763-1821 began his career studying theology, but under the tutelage of Joseph Barth turned his energies to opthamology, and he was one of the earliest to make treatment and surgery of the eyes a separate discipline. "Beer became a popular teacher, and attracted a number of students who later excelled in the field of ophthalmology. Among his better known pupils were William Mackenzie, Philipp Franz von Walther, Carl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787–1840), Johann Nepomuk Fischer (1777–1847), Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck (1776–1851), Anton von Rosas (1791–1855),… Read More

Description:
Dublin: Printed for G. Risk, G. Ewing, and W. Smith, Booksellers in Dame-Street, MDCCXXXII 1732. FIRST IRISH EDITION. 2 volumes in 1. 8vo, 195 x 118 mms., pp. [x], 220; [ii], 245 [246 blank], engraved vignette on each title-page, contemporary calf; lackk label, front joint slightly cracked, but a good to very good copy. The present book, Alciphron, was the longest work written by the great Irish philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753), preeminent proponent of the philosophy of immaterialism, who was also Bishop of Cloyne, and Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. The first edition of Alciphron was published by Tonson in London in 1732, but this first Irish edition published by Risk in Dublin the same year is far more rare, and has interest of its own: Berkeley being Irish, obviously, and the two editions, Tonson's in London and Risk's in Dublin, being in 1732 "nearly simultaneously released", according to Adam Grzelinski, an expert on the circumstances of the book's… Read More

Amsterdam, Chez Pierre Mortier, 1745. FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATION. 12mo, 168 x 100 mms., pp. xxiv, 343 [344 blank], including half-title, recent quarter sheepskin, red morocco label, old marbled boards. A goodish copy. "Jessop noted that the catalogue of the Surgeon-Geneeral's Library, Washington, attributes the translation to D. R. Bouiller. The translator suppressed Berkelery title, Siris, etc., explaining in his preface that he thought it misleading and too obscure for the generality of his readers. He stated that he used as the source of his text the 'third edition', that is presumably, the second Dublin edition; he had also profited by manuscript corrections and additions, which the author had supplied" (Keynes). Jessop 184. Keynes 73. The translation was reviewed in Acta Eruditorum (Leipzig, 1746).

Description:
London: Printed for J. Debrett..., 1801. 8vo, 227 x 143 mms., pp. [viii], 134 [ 135 - 136], six plans on five folding engraved leaves at pages 34, 42, 55, 79, and 125, original wrappers, uncut; spine somewhat perished, and the binding a bit knocked about, but a good copy of a book as originally issued. Boswell first publshed this work himself in 1779, with a second edition appearing in 1790, followed by a third in 1792. The Monthly Review noticed the work in 1780: "One circumstance, which may possibly have regarded its progress [of making meadows] has been the want of some intelligent guide to direct the process.... Whatever information may be necessary in this business, seems to be amply supplied in the work before us. The Author, Mr. George Boswell, seems to be a sensible understanding man, who writes...with what he is really acquainted with. Whoever has land capable of being converted into water-meadows, though it were but a single acre, will do well to read the present treatise."… Read More

He had an honourable and a successful career as playwright and theatre manager, probably the best theatre manager of the century. London: William H. Ainsworth..., 1827. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 178 x 107 mms., pp. [iv], 194 [195 - 196 adverts dated May, 1827], original boards, uncut, paper label on spine, which is a little defective with some loss of paper. The writer and Church of England Clergyman George Croly (1780 - 1860) was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College; he moved to London in 1810 and pursued a literary career. His successful poem, Paris in 1815 (1817) elicited a lampoon from Byron in Don Juan but was approvingly reviewed by John Croker Wilson. May Fair was reviewed in the Quarterly Review for 1828, along with several other poems. The reviewer comments, "'May Fair' is a playful satire on the manners of the time - displaying talents quite equal, in our opinion, to the 'Advice to Julia' [by Henry Luttrell] - though not, we rather suspect, written by an author so intimately conversant with the scenes touched on.... We hope the author will in his next performance take care… Read More

Writing in The Monthly Review, October 1776, William Enfield claimed that Campbell had "discovered a clearness of discernment and accuracy of observation, which justly entitle him to be ranked among the most judicious critics." Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, and sold by Gideon Crawford in the Parliament-Close, and other Booksellers. MDCCXLVIII. 1748. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. [vi], 36, 19th century half calf, marbled boards, red leather label; corners a bit worn but a very good copy. In his survey of matters infernal, the historian of ideas Damian Frank Pearson notes in his study that George Craighead and another thinker, Tobias Swinden, contended that hell must be in the Sun: "Tobias Swinden (1726) and George Craighead (1748) both argued that Hell could not be in the earth as there would be no room for all the dead and not enough air and fuel to keep the fires burning for eternity, and Hell had been created to confine the fallen angels after the revolt in heaven. The location of Hell could not be in the earth. Their place for Hell was within the confines of the Sun, with the sun-spots being the gateways to the eternal fires. Craighead also challenged what he saw as the heretical and atheist… Read More

Newcastle Upon Tyne, Printed for the Author. 1788. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 178 x 107 mms., pp. [5] 6 - 127 [128 blank], recent (or fairly recent) full polished calf, gilt borders on covers with thistle ornament at each corner, spine ornately gilt, red morocco label, all edges gilt; front joint slightly rubbed, but a very good to fine copy. George Eunson seems to have had a colourful career; I quote from Richard Platt's book, Smuggling in the British Isles: A History(2012: "Most of the smuggling on Orkney, though, consisted of illegal malting of Barley and stilling of whiskey, and many of the tales speak of how wiley Orcadians concealed their stills and steeping malt from the prying eye of the gauger. There are exceptions to this rule: the most renowned of Orkney's smugglers was probably George Eunson. He started his adult life as a cooper's apprentice, but soon became restless, and took command of a smuggling ship. He was too greedy, however, and soon the ship's owners… Read More
