Description:
1709. G., H. (Horat. Gram.) THE EAGLE AND THE ROBIN. An Apologue. Translated from the Original of Aesop, written Two Thousand Years since, and now rendered in familiar Verse... Together with TAFFEY'S TRIUMPH: Or, A New Translation of the Cambro-muo-maxia: In Imitation of Milton. By a Gentleman of Oxford. London: Printed and Sold by Henry Hills... 1709. 16 pp. Octavo, 7 x 4 3/8 in., disbound: The first and final (conjugate) leaves are detached and separated at the fold, else clean and very good. "Preface signed 'Horat. Gram.' presumably for Horace the schoolmaster. There is no evidence that it was translated from Aesop. Printed in Nichols, Collection III. 1-13 as by William King (1663-1712)... the attribution should be treated with suspicion. ... 'Taffey's triumph' is Daniel Bellamy's translation of Edward Holdsworth's Muscipula." (Foxon E5).

What follows is a series of excerpts from an informative article found online at http://wwwwp.mext.go.jp/hakusyo/book/hpbz198103/hpbz198103_2_035.html "The Normal School, which was under the direct jurisdiction of the Department of Education, was also requested to compile elementary school textbooks on the basis of its practical experience. Also an office for editing elementary school textbooks was set up in the Normal School in December, 1872. The Department of Education encouraged independent prefectures to reprint the textbooks and other educational material which it and the Normal School had compiled, and it was not long before… Read More

Description:
MS. GALANTIERE, Lewis. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN LITERARY FRANCE. The manuscript, 7 typewritten pages, of an article printed in the Boston journal The Independent, issue of September 27, 1924, "Special Fall Book Number." The title appears to have been added by the editor and was in fact changed in the printed version to "Marcel Proust and the Outlook in France." Besides pencilled copy editing marks and printing instructions, the text bears several ink corrections and additions in the author's hand. (Galantiere, an American writer then living in Paris, acted as mentor and friend to Hemingway when he arrived there in 1921.) The text has been folded twice, but shows only light wear and soiling. This is a fine copy.
