VG+ with light wear, some age-toning of the text.

Philadelphia: A. J. Rowland, 1897. 1st edition. Inscribed by Geil in 1899 "with Kindest regards of the author." VG with some fading and wear, but a sound copy overall. A narrative of his pilgrimage to the Greek isle of Patmos, an early Christian center where biblical historians believe John the Apostle was exiled, received his apocalyptic visions, and wrote the Book of Revelation. An engaging travelogue, with material on the island's history, people, geography, churches and monasteries, and more. Illustrated with a portrait, b&w photographic plates, a map, and small text illustrations. Geil (1865-1925) was born in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He gained fame as an unordained evangelist, explorer, lecturer, and author of ten books based on his travels to the Holy Land, the Mediterranean, and elsewhere. Original studio portrait by the noted Japanese art and commercial photographer, an important figure in the transition from pictorialism to modern photography in Japan. Full-length B&W portrait of a young woman in kimono with obi. Subject and date unknown, but evidently from the post-war era (circa 1940s to 1960s.) In the original folder from Ogawa Gesshu's studio. His name is stamped in silver lettering on the front cover and embossed on the inner mount. Lower left margin of photo with embossed stamp: G. Ogawa / Osaka. Folder measures 9 by 11 inches. Stiff tan covers with protective inner tissue guard. Photograph is 6 by 8.5 inches, including white borders. (Image size: 5 by 7 inches.) Upper edge of photo tipped to the mount. Minor wear to the folder and slight creasing of the tissue guard. Photo is Fine. A scarce example of a portrait from Ogawa Gesshu's studio.

1994 Promotional card signed by Doris Grumbach (1918-2022.) The photographic card reproduces the cover of her 1994 memoir, Fifty Days of Solitude. Printed on Kodak paper. 5 by 7 inches. Signed by Grumbach in black ink with her initials. Fine. Grumbach had a long and varied career as an editor, educator, novelist, memoirist, biographer, critic, essayist, and bookseller. She and her late partner, Sybil Pike, operated Wayward Books in Washington, DC, and later Sargentville, Maine. (Fifty Days of Solitude chronicled Grumbach's time alone during a Maine winter while Pike was on a book-buying trip.)
