Translated from the Italian (where the book is referred to as the Pasticciaccio) by William Weaver.

Original green cloth binding, worn at corners, with fraying and a small tear at the head of the spine. Pale stainon front board, remnants of a bookseller's label or bookplate on front pastedown, and, sadly, a few pages (less than 10) with underlining in ink. Binding loosening a bit, but still sound. A good reference copy of the uncommon first edition. Galabin was a British physician who wrote extensively on obstetrics and gynaecology but is best remembered for this textbook, which went through six editions between 1879 and 1903, and his Manual of Midwifery, first published in 1886.

Corners and spine ends rubbed and lighly bumped. Inscribed on the half-title page "With kindest regards and good wishes to Mrs. Harold Marsh from the author, your second cousin, S.D. Gaudin, Transcoma, Man. Dec. 12th, 1942." Also has a correction in the author's hand to a caption on one of the plates. Rev. Gaudin and his wife were Methodist missionaries who commenced among the Cree in 1891.

Gauvin (1881-1978) was a notable author and speaker in the Freethought movement. Here he details the many perfidies of Germany and her allies and asserts that "we must do all in our power to preserve our liberties by keeping a conquering military despotism away from our shores. And the things which we cherish for ourselves we must help France and England to uphold, that all of us may do our duty to humanity as guardians of civilization."

Glaser used a "multi-stone lithographic process to achieve a monochromatic effect that seems to have been rare if not unknown among American lithographers. Using five or more stones, they laid down a series of separate shades ranging from white to light sepia-grey to the darkest sepia-grey or black. With Ellen Glasgow's signature on a 3.5 x 4-inch slip of paper laid in. The autograph was probably provided in response to a request; it does not appear to be clipped from a larger document. Glasgow's third novel, which explores the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Southern life.
