Description:
New York: Columbia University, 1991. Near fine. 153 pp. Featured inside: Czechoslovakian Writers After the Revolution. Columbia arrived on the scene with Nobel laureates in their pages. For its 1977 debut, Columbia: A Journal of Literature & Art got off to an auspicious start, snagging a short story by Nobel Prize–winner Kawabata Yasunari. That piece, “Footfalls,” is reprinted in the current number, 40, alongside work by Raymond Carver, Lorrie Moore, Charles Wright, and A.R. Ammons, and other highlights from the magazine’s impressive first 28 years. The magazine originated in the mind of Daniel Halpern, former chair of the Writing Division of the Columbia School of the Arts and now publisher of Ecco. In the mid-’70s, he wanted to make Columbia’s MFA program more student centered. “I explained to the administration that these kids were paying huge amounts of money for, essentially, one workshop,” he says. Along with new seminars and “short… Read more

Description:
The lesbian-feminist record label Olivia Records Single sheet, 8.5 x 11." Cream-colored, both sides. General letter to "friends," about groups' products, progress and plans. Informs consumer about the politics of Olivia Records.A separate lesbian feminist movement emerged in the 1970s that reacted to the discrimination of women within the gay rights and counterculture movements, and to the heteronormativity that was embedded in the 1960s US feminist movement.Women's music labels such as Olivia contributed to a 1970s lesbian sub-culture by providing a public platform for the expression of topics that were lacking in dominant political discourse, and helped consumers develop strategies to cope, organize, and articulate their experiences.Olivia Records went on to become one of the most successful of several women-owned-and-operated record labels that emerged during the women's movement of the 1970s. Although Olivia Records struggled with and ultimately succumbed to mainstream capitalist pressures, the… Read more

Description:
New York: Jack Green, nd [ca. 1960]. First Edition. Tall 4to. Top-stapled legal-sized mimeo. Heavily toned. Fairly brittle. Folded in half with some splitting at the fold. First page separated from staple. Bit of chipping at edges here and there. About good. One of the rarest and more unusual journals of the mimeo revolution, Newspaper published 15 issues between 1957 and 1965. Best remembered today for almost single-handedly establishing the reputation of William Gaddis' THE RECOGNITIONS through Green's thorough and devestating deconstruction of the novel's negative reviews (originally published in Newspaper 12-14, reprinted as FIRE THE BASTARDS in 1992), as well as (most infamously) his 1962 full-page ad in the Village Voice extolling the work's virtues. "[P]art conceptual art, part political tract, and part 'zine [...] 'Green' [a psuedonym] used his underground tabloid for cultural commentary and deliciously satirical (yet superbly well-documented)… Read more

n.p.: n.p., [1967]. 9.0 x 6.0” Black and white exhibition announcement with two photographs for a 1967 showing of Beat photographs by Mark Green at the Seven Arts Center in San Francisco. Mild creasing and soiling with some foxing on the back of card. The show titled, SAN FRANCISCO . . . THEN AND NOW. . . .’56 - ’67: Photographs by Mark Green is a ten year retrospective of photographs by Mark Green tracing the evolution of San Francisco’s Bohemia from the Beat Generation of the ‘50s to the hippies. Green, a photographer, poet, arts advocate and former journalist from Cleveland, Ohio came to San Francisco in 1956. He worked as a bartender at the Co-Existence Bagel Shop, a local spot for Beat gatherings. It was during this time that Green became involved with the Beat Movement and the San Francisco Renaissance. Green became friends with "Beatnick" figures including Edward Silverstone Taylor and Patricia Marx who encouraged him to take up photography. Green's poems… Read more

Various places: mostly 1902-1903 and 1910- 1911. 11" x 8 1⁄2". Quarter cloth over marbled paper- covered boards. 54 pages with 49 items of correspondence and 27 other items of ephemera adhesive mounted; an additional 16 items of correspondence and 10 items of ephemera are laid in. Book good: heavily worn with loss at edges, front joint split but holding, most corners of leaves lost but only affecting some characters in two letters. Contents generally very good.

This is the correspondence archive of Helen Gruppé, wife of artist Charles Paul Gruppé. Charles was an American painter living in the Netherlands during the period covered by this archive and Helen was apparently staying at various hotels throughout the country. Gruppé, was also a dealer who represented Dutch painters in the United States. As this scrapbook shows, Helen played an integral role in the business, coordinating with museum directors, dealing with collectors and also promoting her musician son, Paulo.
