Description:
Southern Pacific H&T Society. Hardcover. New. Much of the book includes the many short lines - most of them logging - operating steam locomotives in the west during the period just after World War II through the 1950s. If you want to see logging locomotives in color, this is a great book. Many color photographs of Southern Pacific steam locomotives finish out the book. There are a few pictures of other mainline steam, but this is a book about the many short lines and the Southern Pacific including the SP narrow gauge. In the early 1950s many railroads were still operating steam locomotives on the west coast of the United States. Charles Givens was there to photograph them in operation. Come along on this pilgrimage to see mainline steam on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Western Pacific plus the many logging short lines that connected with the major railroads such as the Arcata & Mad River. Contents: Northern California Coast, pp. 1-18, Oregon, pp. 19-23, Washington, pp. 24-36, Vancouver Island,… Read More

Description:
Southern Pacific H&T Society. Hardcover. New. Hardcover with dust jacket, 216 pages, standard landscape format 11 x 8.5 x .75 in., over 330 photographs, maps and diagrams. This long-awaited title lives up to the expectations. The EP&SW along with its parent, Phelps-Dodge Corporation, spurred the growth of Arizona and New Mexico beginning with copper mining and smelting and later coal mining and timber harvesting. The author, Vernon J. Glover, I consider 'Mr. New Mexico Railroads' as he has collected much information regarding the state over the years. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, copper was a growth industry in the United States. The rapid growth of copper production and the surrounding towns in southeastern Arizona made it clear that wagon freight to and from main line railheads was no longer a sufficient means of transportation - there was a need for more direct rail connections to the eastern markets. Fruitless discussions with the Southern Pacific led to building the El Paso & Southwestern… Read More

Description:
White River Productions. Hardcover. New. This is my favorite era of American railroading. First-Generation diesels in their as-delivered and later day paint schemes. Passenger trains carrying the mail, Alco PAs and EMD F-units. Depots still well-maintained including those made out of wood. Unusual diesels now long-gone such as Southern Pacific's U50s and various Baldwin-made locomotives. There are a handful of Southern Pacific steam photographs such as a head-on shot of 4445 starting to leave Bakersfield with the depot in the background. The Kaiser Steel ore-trains, Trona Railway, Plaster City narrow gauge, Pacific Electric, Santa Fe red-and-silver, 40 foot billboard boxcars, clean diesels and no graffiti. I personally missed this era and saw the remains later on. I need a time machine to go back and experience it all. What a glorious railroad era! The photographs count approximates each railroad's presence in southern California. First is Southern Pacific with Santa Fe as a close second. Union… Read More

Description:
R Robb Ltd. Softcover. New. This book illustrates the narrow gauge freight trains operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad between Alamosa, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico, during the years 1965 to 1968. The 92 miles of track connecting those two points were part of 293 miles of narrow and dual gauge railroad still then operated by the D&RGW, the remnant of what had once been an extensive narrow gauge railroad 'empire' in the Rocky Mountains. The Alamosa-Chama segment, notable for its mountain scenery, included a dramatic crossing of 10,015-foot high Cumbres Pass. Includes maps and a roster of D&RGW narrow gauge equipment in 1968.
