Anderson, an American yeoman in the U.S. Navy and devout Christian who details his travels, training and duties related to his service for America in 1918. The diary spans July 23, 1918 - Feb 28, 1919, and chronicles the author's time in Iowa, The Great Lakes, Philadelphia and New York City. Anderson's diary begins in the summer of 1918 with Anderson as a third class Yeoman who is being moved from company to company at the end of World War 1. When we meet Anderson, he is visiting Co. 434 at Camp Boone in Iowa, working under Commander Earl Osmon (a sheet metal worker from Nettle Creek, Grundy County, Illinois). Usher of Madison Ave., New York City to record her ocean trips and travel between 1900 and 1903. The diary begins with her landing in Liverpool and a fond farewell to her cabin mate Mrs. Haigh. A woman traveling alone, Ms. Usher does not have an easy time of it right from the start when she is placed with 'an awful looking man' and begs the married couple next door to leave their door open just in case. A dedicated diarist Ms. Usher records everyone she meets, the places she goes and her impressions of all she sees. She travels sparingly taking 3rd class berths and when during the trip her bicycle falls apart and the repair shop charges her two shillings she laments 'I shall spend all my money on the old thing.' Monroe Michigan MI Wakefield/Barnsby UK. Poor. 1870. Original Cloth. On offer is an unusual and intriguing 1870 travel diary penned, research suggest, by Mr. J.F. Smith who begins the book in the Wakefield/Barnsby area of England. Beginning January 1st the diarist fully writes up until the day his trip ends on April 20th when it seems he returns home to the shores of the USA. In fact it almost comes as a surprise that he boards ship. Also very interesting this diary which is in poor shape has a one page insert from an old November 1869 journal stuck in among the 1870 book. On offer is an old cloth-bound notebook (9"x12") containing the stored patent papers for twenty-four (24) mechanical inventions from 1897 thru 1965 with the majority in the first 20 years of the century. Documents were maintained by an aero-space firm in Massachusetts that went out of business in the nineties but whose name we do not know. Papers include diagrams, descriptions, technical data and patent info for devices that were likely issued to, purchased by or owned by the company over many years. He was an artist in the early 20's-30's era the books provide some details of getting artwork done for Golden Books and Zane Gray's novels. He makes notes for deadline items needed such as headings for a book or ads, etc. Three of them have the address section in the back filled in with names and addresses. Two [2] interesting original historical documents handwritten and hand-drawn by the Marquis de Falletans [sadly the last of his line at the time of writing] in the early 19th century specifically 1825 and 1839. The Falletans family dates back to 1100 AD and had provided France with many, many high ranking army officers - a General of the National Guard under Napoleon, Captain of the King's Hunters and in the political arena the family gave its name to a town and county in France and one of whose family was the Mayor of the town of Busy. The family carried titles without interruption for over 700 years. The second document features a couple of heraldic/armorial drawings. VG.. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.

ALGONQUIN PARK ONTARIO CANADA. Very Good. 1941. On offer is a super 12 x 7 inch photo album dating back to 1941 and having pictures through 1944 of one family's car trips but mostly of one summer camper's Algonquin Park experience at Camp Tanamakoon. Originally of the Donald M. 'Bud' Sutherland family there are mentions of the Baillie family. There are approximately 75 mounted pictures and another 20+ loose. Most if not all pictures are identified. Mentioned spots in central Ontario include Pickerel Lake, Round and Buck Lakes, Madawaska. There is one shot at the end of the album that is dated as "The Largo Choir after the June 1943 Concert". Super shot of a float plane. Most of the photos are 4 x 3 inches, some a tad smaller and the odd one is 5 x 7 inches. ALLONBY ENGLAND. Fair. 1807. On offer is a superb early 19th Century mathematics and complex arithmetic ciphering book. There are over 320 pages of text and titles in a lovely calligraphic hand including a folding table all in pen and ink. Identified as having belonged to the Costin Family of Allonby England this is believed to be a school book from the highly noted Quaker School at Wigton dated by paper watermarked 1807. This book was a massive effort by the unidentified Costin Family member but unique for the breadth and depth of the mathematical equations and complexity of the problems. The book stands as a testament to the quality of education at the Wigton School. The school book is in a very well handled state detached from the worn binding the contents are now loose the sections although individually sewn are coming away from each other. Sensational archive of handwritten diaries centered around the Brubaker family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Twenty [20] books comprised of sixteen [16] handwritten diaries, three [3] small notebooks and one [1] published book with manuscript notes. The diaries are dated 1914, 1916, 1917, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1927 and 1927. On average the books are 80% full. There are four authors: J. Henry Brubaker has written 12 diaries and most certainly 2 of the 3 notebooks. His wife Anna has written one notebook in her maiden name [Groff] and daughters, Anna Ethel [3] and Susan Violet [1]. The Brubakers appear to have been prominent rural business people in the farm supply business. A huge family as evidenced by the copious genealogical notes for the Lancaster County area as the notebooks specifically and the diaries are a wealth of family names and the connections.… Read More

On offer is an outstanding example of a complete French legal agreement dating from the years immediately following the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was drafted in Bordeaux for a family group that lived in the neighbouring village of Le Bouscat. Context indicates that the document lays out an agreement to distribute items from two parents to a group of siblings, possibly a will. On offer is a beautiful, richly-decorated Yellowstone Park leather photo album portraying the Spear family’s 1930 family trip intertwined with photographs of scenes for a long-past American west. The unknown author/photographer of this album accompanied her parents on a road trip from their home across the United States to the Rocky Mountains and back. They also took a side-trip to Niagara Falls in Canada. From context, we can determine that it is a young woman who is traveling with her parents. The family surname is Spear, and context suggests that they likely lived in Rhode Island. The album opens with two pages from a tourist publication broadsheet. These two pages carry a full map of the continental United States and illustrate the main highways crisscrossing the country. On one page, she lists in order the states that they passed through. PORT NEWARK NEW JERSEY NJ. Good+. 1944. On offer is a super, original 1944 - 1945 manuscript diary handwritten by a dedicated, enthusiastic shipbuilder, Mr. Farlenza, in the Newark Shipyard. While there is a name, Marie Jane Cecilia Natale Farlenza, written twice on the inside cover usually denoting authorship, reading the entries it is clear that the information is of the author's wife who turned the book over to her husband. Here are some snippets: "Got up at 645 Marie made me breakfast and lunch picked up the riders. Salvatore is such a bull thrower and a pain in the neck. My assistant foreman Carl Lynn wanted to know if I am teaching my helper Hugh Flannelly how to put on the clips but he is too old [65 years] and not smart enough or interested. It was swell out. OWEGO TIOGA BINGHAMPTON CANDOR NEW YORK. Good. 1869. On offer is a remarkable, original 1869 manuscript diary of Dr. Leroy Dwight Farnham dated Owego New York. This is handwritten by Dr. Farnham, 19 years old at the time of writing. The young Dr. Farnham, originally from Tioga New York, is teaching in Candor and living in Owego. While in Candor for the week he stays with various families then back home to Owego for the weekend social events. Dr. Farnham writes a lot about the Owego Academy closing and his schooling under Professor Prindle. [Ephemera included is a receipt from the Academy from the 1860s. The academy closed in 1869.] Historians and collectors of post Civil War era, Reconstruction period will note his entries of an extended river voyage in the spring: Leroy and his father take their boat on the Susquehanna River into Pennsylvania. Tightly written in pencil, there are detailed entries for every day of the year. It charts his journey from his family home in Wisconsin all the way to China via India and crossing the infamous 'Hump' just "15 minutes from Jap territory". What is particularly of interest is that Joe is an emotive writer and offers a 'no-holds-barred' look at the Army, the war, Commanding Officers, his buddies and his duties. And there are details aplenty from movies seen to the real life first hand experiences of life and death, hope and desperation. On offer is the personal home and business accounting log book of a man, John Fegan, patriarch of a family Masonry company, living in Lyons, Iowa from 1880 all the way to 1895. The book is a fascinating mix of both professional and personal expenses over the years. This is a fascinating piece of history. At the beginning of the book, January 5th, 1880, Daniel Fegan is employed, seemingly as a Mason, by the ‘Clinton & Lyons Horse Railway Company’. The accounts of 1880 and 1881 are included almost exclusively on the first 8 pages. On these pages, under the entries for 1880 and 1881, are entries for 1885 and 1886 as well. Later in the book, around page 31, there are a number of pages devoted to the living expenses for 1880 written down. “Jan 5th - To 1 bottle of ink and 5 pens - $.15; 6th - To Tobacco and cigars - $.60; 7th - To candies and nuts - $.40...9th - To 12 photographs part pay - $2.00”.
