Fabricius (1644-1729), was a leading classical philologist and inspector of the schools of the Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg. This is "a biobibliographical dictionary. It is a roughly classified list of books owned by Johannes Fabricius, with brief but very valuable accounts of the life and writings of the various authors. Since larger and more recent reference works often do not mention these authors, who were chiefly minor sixteenth- and seventeenth-century scholars, Fabricius is likely to give helpful information. Text and illus. engraved on both sides. Japan: late Edo or early Meiji. An exciting survival: a woodblock used to print a Japanese book on physiognomy; it bears carefully carved illustrations of human faces and an ear. Our block bears the text and illustrations for four leaves (nos. 94-97) in one of the book's five volumes. Three of the leaves have images incorporated within the text. NIJL and WorldCat (accession no.: 42283716, for the 1892 ed.) use an additional title for the present book, Sōhō hijukai 相法秘受解. We have not been able to discern the edition from which this comes; there were several published in the 19th century. Near fine. This would be a useful specimen for teaching collections on the global history of the printed book.

First edition of a rare work, containing the important collected writings of Fagnano (1682-1766), Italian nobleman and mathematician. Many of the texts printed here appear for the first time. Fagnano's advances in algebra and geometry were very far-reaching and his work on the rectification of the lemniscate made him, according to Legendre, the true founder of the theory of elliptic functions. First edition, and quite rare, of this monograph on the dialect of Shaoxing, Zhejiang, written at a pivotal moment in the history of the study of language in China. During the final few decades of Qing rule, language emerged as one of the most important areas of both nationalist and regionalist sentiment. Writing in vernacular Chinese began to gradually supplant writing in classical Chinese (Kaske, The Politics of Language in Chinese Education, 1895-1919), and dialects were studied to buttress particular visions of the unity and diversity of the Chinese people (Tam, Dialect and Nationalism in China, 1860-1960, Chap. 2). In late imperial China, there were two kinds of dictionaries: those arranged according to the shape of characters and those arranged according to their pronunciation. Pronunciation-based dictionaries were known as "rhyme books," since the characters were arranged by rhyme rather than initial sound. In the Qing period, the earliest rhyme books to which scholars had access dated from the Song, some five centuries earlier. Regulation of the written language and its testing in exams were two prerogatives of the imperial state, and so the Song government sponsored the compilation of rhyme books that defined the linguistic standard. Unhappy with the rhyme books then in existence, the court in 1037 CE ordered their revision. The result, finished in 1039, received the name Collected Rhymes. [Jianyang, Fujian Province: Sizhi Guan 四知館], Preface dated 1536; published before 1628. A rare Ming edition, corrected, that expounds on the medical concepts of Zhu Zhenheng 朱震亨 (style name Danxi, 1282-1358). Zhu or "Master Danxi," is today known as the last and greatest of the "Four Master Physicians of the Jin-Yuan" dynasties. The innovations of these four physicians, Liu Wansu (1120-1200?), Zhang Congzheng (1156-1228), Li Gao (1180-1251), and Zhu, shaped Chinese learned medicine between the 13th and 17th centuries. Zhu's medical theories were also popular in Korea and Japan. The valuable notes have been added by the translator Raymond Balthasar Maiseau (1782-1843), who also converted English weights and measures into the metric system. Faulhaber (1580-1635), a teacher of mathematics at Ulm and a friend of Kepler, made his most lasting accomplishments in the dissemination and explanation of the logarithmic method of calculation. This is Faulhaber's second book and caused him considerable problems with the city's municipal council, as it was published without the permission of the office responsible for supervision of the schools. This book describes a surveying instrument invented by Daniel Speckle in the Netherlands. The fine plate depicts the semicircular instrument, which is divided into 220 parts. Rare Sergio Fergola (1936-94) exhibition catalogue, published by the gallery that Gian Enzo Sperone was managing at the beginning of his art-world career. Sperone became director of the space in December 1962 at the age of 23. Soon thereafter, Michelangelo Pistoletto introduced him to Ileana and Michael Sonnabend, which resulted in Il Punto's presentation of Roy Lichtenstein in December 1963. With an essay by Elie-Charles Flamand and check-list of works exhibited. A very good copy.
