Buitenzorg, 's Lands Plantentuin - Botanischer Garten, 1927. Large 8vo (24.1 x 17.0 cm). iv, 119 pp.; 12 text illustrations, 18 fine photographic plates. A unique pattered batik-cloth binding with gilt title on the spine and front board. Original printed front wrapper bound in. = A well-illustrated paper from the Hortus Botanicus of Buitenzorg (now Bogor, Java), dealing with plants living in and near volcanoes. The plates therefore are of geological/volcanological interest too. The binding is quite exceptional, of historical interest, and beautifully preserved. Friedrich Carl Von Faber (1880-1954) was a German botanist and staff member of the Bogor Botanical Gardens, which is still one of the most important botanical gardens in the world. Internally a very good, clean copy. Unique in this state. Not in Stafleu and Cowan.

Almost every French département had its own keen malacologist tackling the local malacofauna. This one, written by Jacques Sébastien François Léonce Marie Paul Fagot (1842-1908) differs from most by the inclusion of new species. Offprint from the society's Bulletin, volumes 19 and 20, where it was published in parts, with a new half-title, title page, and page numbering. Includes a "Nouvelle École" drawing of freshwater clam dimensions, to be used in describing new species. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the wrappers. Scarce.

Toulouse, J. Bonnet [for Miscellanea Entomologica], 1929. 8vo (24.0 x 15.8 cm). 197 pp., 141 text engravings. Near contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised, gilt-chained bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = A rare work by the French entomologist and parasitologist Louis Falcoz (1870-1938) separately published from the "Faune Franco-Rhenane" series (Revue Miscellanea Entomologica volumers 31 and 32). This work deals with the silken fungus beetles. "[B]oth adults and larvae appear to feed exclusively on fungi although in a wide variety of habitats and situations, such as rotting wood and shed animal fur and feathers. Around 600 species have been described and are placed in about 60 genera" (Wikipedia). Falcoz's work contains descriptions and illustrations of whole animals and taxonomically important parts of adult specimens. Original printed wrappers. = A rare and important, well-illustrated monograph of Mediterranean Rhodomelaceae (red algae) by the German botanist Paul Falkenberg (1848-1925). It forms the complete 26th monograph in the series Fauna und Flora des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres-Abschnitte herausgegeben von der zoologischen Station zu Neapel. Uncut. Slight wear and to wrapper edges, including two short tears to the lower margin of the rear wrapper. A few, small, marginal spots but text leaves and plates generally quite clean. A very good copy. Republisher's green leatherette with gilt title on the spine. = This monograph of Mediterrenean red algae is a part of the Fauna and Flora de Golfo di Napoli which was published over a long period and of which most original parts are rare. In this reprint the plates are printed on smoother paper than the text. Some light shelfwear, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Published as monograph 32 in the museum's Trabajos, Serie Geológica. Uncut. A very good, clean copy.

Contemporary half cloth over printed boards. = A cell-biological study by the Russian botanist and plant-physiologist Alexander Sergeivitch Famintzin (1841-1896). Offprint from the academy's Mémoires with its own pagination. Boards spotted and with a vague old private owner's stamp, the same name written in the margin of the title page, text leaves slightly age-toned, otherwise a very good copy.

In Chinese with Latin nomenclature and description references. English title handwritten on first blank recto; Chinese stamp ("sample booklet") on title, slightly offsetting to the opposite first blank verso; otherwise an excellent, clean copy.

London, The Royal Society, 1830. 4to (29.6 x 23.1 cm). 57 pp. In a recent protective portfolio. = The famous British physicist and chemist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was the speaker at the yearly Bakerian Lecture in 1829. This is a rare original issue of the first printed version of his speech, published in the influential and famous Philosophical Transactions. Do not confuse with the much abridged 8vo edition. Disbound but uncut. A very good, clean copy. Not in DiLaura.

Of each genus, the original author(s), date, source, and type (if any) are given, as well as the family to which they belong. Volume I deals with Aa - Epochnium; II with Eprolithus - Peersia; and III with Pegaeophyton - Zyzygium. Alternatively these three volumes are Regnum Vegetabile volumes 100, 101, and 102. Quite uncommon. A very good set.

Original full embossed and pebbled black calf; gilt-stippled board edges and fine gilt inner dentelles. Iridescent endpapers. Spine with five raised bands and gilt title; front board with gilt initials "B. F." (= Berthe Fauché); rear board with gilt vignette "Maison des Oiseaux". All edges gilt. = A fine, attractively bound album of large watercolour illustrations of flowering plants (and one with fungi), showing examples of the 15 classes of plants, covering 62 "principal" families. Original printed wrappers. = A massive work, dealing with the benthic polychaete worms of the northeastern Atlantic, including many new species. Written by the French invertebrate zoologist and leading 'polychaetologist' of the first half of the 20th century, Pierre Louis André Fauvel (1866-1958). A polychaete family, Fauveliopsidae, was named after him. A similar-titled sister paper by Fauvel dealing with the pelagic forms is much smaller and much more common. Very ligt shelf wear, internally clean, unmarked. A near mint copy.

Paris, Sandoz & Fischbacher; Neuchâtel, J. Sandoz, 1874. Square 4to (23.6 x 20.7 cm). 108 [53; 9, 46] pp.; 40 chromolithographed plates. Contemporary quarter cloth with mounted lithographed pictorial title. = A complete copy of a well-illustrated work on edible and similar poisonous mushrooms by Jules Favre-Guillarmod (1822-1904), published, apparently, in two parts combined here, and with two indexes on one leaf. This is the second edition with additional notes to the introduction, and a few rearrangements of the figures, resulting in one less plate than in the 1869 edition. The pagination of the second part is a bit peculiar and we find text page 11 being the last, referring to a species present on a plate together with another species described on page 43. The index does not list page 11 but suggests that the description is on page 43. Also, p. 37 follows p. 31 because the text of both pages refers to the same plate.
