An excellent (and thus rare) hardback with DJ copy of British author and journalist Daniel Farson's classic book on ghosts aimed originally at older children and young adults. As such, many copies are in average or poor condition due to the amount of re reading at young hands, but not this one! The book covers a great range of ghostly themes, both 'factual' and fictional. These include haunted houses, poltergeists, ghosts at sea, animal ghosts, and ghost hunting. The illustrations are excellent and plentiful. Pages are clean and clear: no inscriptions, no notes, and no underlining. NOT an ex library book. No apparent markings at all on pages, except arguably a little half-hidden blotching to front pastedown/FEP but this is none too visible at all. DJ is unclipped and is excellent: the slightest of shelf wear but otherwise completely intact and the original covers of the cover illustrations are as bright as ever. Animals of long ago are compared with their modern descendants in this fun volume aimed at younger readers. The descriptions and artwork of the ancient creatures provide an insight into where paleontological research was at during the late 1950s and early 1960s. A fascinating time piece. Even if the dinosaurs are not quite described in a way we would now agree with, the text is fun and the drawings detailed and commendable for its age.
Book is unusually clean and tight for its age and its presumed association with child readers! Pages are clear and bright with no tears or marks. Dust jacket is probably G+ for this book, price clipped but intact and many places exceptional. However there are creases and a couple of small tears, and two small chunks of DJ missing at the rear base. Cloth boards underneath are in very good condition. Writers and partners Ferro and Grumley, founders of the Violet Quill, and who were both to die of AIDS in the late '80s, embark here on a journey of discovery in search of Atlantis. The winding story starts in Rome and ends in the Bahamas, spurred by the reading of an Edgar Cayce story. The writers end up believing the area of what is now known as the Bimini Road is part of the ancient site of Atlantis.
The book is in really good condition. Pages are complete, bright and tidy, with no markings except a little foxing on the top edge. Cloth boards are tight and clean. A very nice copy of the third impression of John Findlay's book on Spiritualism. Pages are excellent: clean and bright with no apparent foxing or age wear at all. A neat signature of a previous owner is on the FEP but apart from that no markings at all. Boards are clean just some normal age wear and a little shelf wear but overall really nice. He looks at why the apparent appearance of ghosts seems to have changed over time, and how their manifestations have been interpreted. A very nice copy. Pages are clean and bright. Its five experimental archaeology projects reveal teams of experienced archaeologists, historians and building engineers recreating the technological feats of ancient civilisations using only the tools available at the time. Subjects include Easter Island, Egyptian obelisks and Roman baths

Historian and Cromwell expert Fitzgibbons turns his attention to the remarkable tale of Cromwell's head. Three years after his majestic funeral in 1658, Cromwell's corpse was removed and 'executed' at Tyburn, first hanged and then decapitated. His head then embarked on three centuries of adventure encountering a whole range of serious and not so serious observers, until it reached its final secret resting place. The book tells the macabre tale but at the same time provides a telling portrait of the great parliamentarian.

French astronomer Flammarion approached spiritualism and all things esoteric with a scientific lens. This is one of his highly regarded books on those topics. This is the first edition, published in London in 1900. A very nice copy. Pages are clean and bright, no real foxing at all compared with most versions of this edition. A little tanning on FEP only. No inscriptions (also rare), and the tissue page before the title is still completely intact, which is likewise scarce. Uncut pages. Red boards are very nice, a few markings here and there from age. Gilt writing clear. Binding is tight, slight give. All pages intact and tightly secure. Spine is very good, just shelter to top and bottom. Corners have a little crumpling. Academics and broadcasters Flenley and Bahn focus on some of the mysteries of Easter Island, and its fascinating and misunderstood prehistoric culture: who were its inhabitants and where did they come from? Why and how did they erect the famous stone statues found all over the island? The authors also introduce us to the island's bizarre birdman cult, and the recently deciphered Rongorongo script engraved on wooden boards. Are there psychological reasons making us want to believe in flying saucers? What is the truth about scientific observatories even now trying to make contact? Can we make observations in space that are literally willed to happen? A very good copy indeed. First edition. Pages are clean, bright and unmarked. A lovely copy of one of British Occultist Dion Fortune's milestone works. In it she reviews and expands on the Qabalah, the underlying philosophical framework of many magical societies in the Western esoteric tradition. This is the ninth impression, published in 1970. Pages are excellent: front FEP has a rather nice private ex-libris sticker and a small date inscription (see photos) but otherwise all pages are remarkably good. No other markings, no foxing, no creasing, notes or highlighting. All rare in this edition. Possibly unread or at most carefully read once. Binding is tight. Dark blue boards are clean and with no crumpling or marking at all. DJ is unclipped, and is very good: the smallest amount of top shelf wear, spine is sun faded, and a minute dent is present. Foss's excellent study debunks the popular myths of Cleopatra as a frivolous temptress who ruled without restraint. His in depth research finds the opposite: she was a shrewd and ambitious politician who governed with daring and skill. She emerges as one of the great leaders of the ancient world.

Frazer, a Scottish anthropologist, wrote this classic work on magic, mythology and religion in the late nineteenth century. This is the first abridged version, published by Macmillan in 1925. Frazer famously proposed that mankind evolves from magic through religious beliefs to scientific rationality. His controversial scrutiny of Christianity was excluded from this abridged edition. It was critically received by scholars, but widely read by many. Its influence was large, including on amongst others T S Eliot, Hemingway and Jung. Lovecraft mentions the book in The Call of Cthulhu. This is a very nice copy indeed. See all photos which are of the edition for sale. John Dee was Renaissance England's first great Hermetic magus, a philosopher magician but also a respected scientist. Dr French's book shows Dee was a truly universal man who investigated all areas of knowledge. French indicates Dee's profound influence on later generations. Hugh Trevor-Roper noted that Dr French "has written a remarkable book".
