Promotional work from the Santa Fe Railroad for the prospective tourist to the southwest that includes descriptions (altitude, population, industries, points of interest, historical tidbits, etc.) of all the towns and stops along the Santa Fe line from Chicago to San Francisco. Illustrated with black and white views and maps. Sheet is divided into eight panels (each side) and offers useful tips for tourists (lodging, side trips, trails, etc.) traveling by Santa Fe Railway. Illustrated with maps and photographs. "Scenic Wonder of the World. Grand Canyon National Park is reached by daily trains from Williams, a town on the main line of the Santa Fe, in Arizona, 382 miles west of Albuquerque. This tremendous chasm, in its most accessible portion, has a length of 217 miles. Its vertical depth is about 6,000 feet and its width is 13 miles, at the point to which visitors are conducted. A hundred Yosemites might lie almost unperceived in its immense reaches.

Thompson mount [11.5 cm x 17.5 cm] with a printed paper label on the reverse. Strong contrasts. Gentle sunning to extremities. View of a now (but, maybe not for long) submerged Glen Canyon. Views on the Colorado River: Glen Canon Series. This canon is 149 miles in length and from 200 to 1600 feet in depth. James H. Fennemore (1849-1941) began his photography career in Beaver, Utah, before moving to Salt Lake City and working for C.R. Savage. He later replaced E.O. Beaman as the photographer of the Powell expedition (1871-72). Fennemore taught John K. Hillers, then a teamster on the expedition - who eventually replaced Fennemore, who quit due to illness. Fennemore was also the photographer at the John D. Lee execution.

Minor nicking to corners of price clipped jacket. This work tells the story of mountain man Sam Lash and his love for the beautiful and aristocratic Lola Salazar. Considered one of the greatest western novels.

Better than very good. Backstrip gently faded. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Benjamin Ferris (1802-1891) served in the (federally installed) Utah Territorial government in 1852-53. "In the early part of the summer of 1852 I was solicited to discharge the duties of Secretary of the Territory of Utah. A Curiosity, long cherished, to visit a portion of the world about which many marvelous accounts had been given, induced me to accept the vacant post. [San Francisco]: Printed at the San Francisco Herald Office, 1855. First English Language Edition. 105pp. Octavo [22 cm] Yellow printed wrappers. Better than very good. Gentle overall wear with minor sporadic foxing to the textblock. Exceedingly rare in original wrappers. First edition in English of the first important book printed in California. Jose Figueroa had been governor of Alta California since 1827. In September, 1834, Hijars and Padres arrived in Monterey as directors of a Mexican colonization project; they expected to take over the mission lands which had been secularized by the Mexican Government in 1833, as well as to assume the governorship and other offices. Figueroa refused to comply with their demands and composed his 'Manifesto a la republica Mejicana' to recount his side of the dispute and explain his own plans for secularization and colonization. Bookplate on the front pastedown with offsetting to the facing page. Illustrated with black and white views. Early western travel narrative by the noted music critic. Henry Theophilus Finck (1854-1926) was an American music critic and author. Among "the most prolific and influential critics of his day", he was chief classical music critic of both the New York Evening Post and The Nation from 1881 to 1924.

[Portland, OR], 1950. Original art [47 cm x 38 cm] / [18.5" x 15"] pen and ink with some white paint (Whiteout?) highlights. Signed at the foot. A whimsical illustration of the sun personified and wearing a crown with its legs splayed across the Midwest, instead of a scepter he's clutching a glowing thermometer, that is labeled 'July Temperatures.' Howard Fisher (1890-1962) began working for the Portland newspaper, 'The Oregon Journal' in 1919, a decade later he was named the editorial cartoonist, a position he held until his retirement in 1956.

Promotional work from the Colorado & Southern Railway that offers views and descriptions of a few of the scenic delights that a passenger might see. "How long ago these towering mountains were lifted from the sea, the wisest philosopher of the world can not tell. At what time those marvelous canons were chiseled, how many eons have passed since the beautiful mountain parks lay spread out before the enraptured gaze of primeval man, no mortal can say. Even the profoundest scientist, backed by all the research of modern inquiry, can not designate the time when the rude aborigine first set eyes upon the snow-capped summits which appear to hang like blue clouds over the western horizon.

[Ashton, ID, 1940. Real photo postcard [9 cm x 14 cm] Divided back. Near fine. Nice view of a snow covered wood building surrounded by pine trees. Bear Gulch opened in 1938, and was Idaho's second ski area that was designed and sketched out by Alf Engen. Bear Gulch operated into the late 1980s. In 1989 the US Forest Service burned down the lodge (seen in this image) and that was the end of Bear Gulch.

Brief illustrated history of the Northwest produced for the Great Northern Railway and illustrated with black and white views and illustrations. Large folding-map [22 cm x 53.5 cm] 'Historic Adventure Land the Northwest ' present at the rear and in nice condition. "Look at the map; westward to the Pacific from Chicago stretch the lines of the Great Northern Railway system through the newest country in the world; through new cities, new fields and farms and through forests only beginning to fall before the steady westward march of population. But the way it takes across the continent is old, and the traveler along this route journeys into a past rich with memories of adventure and heroic achievement." - p.[3].

Frontier Military Series XXV (25). Warmly inscribed by the author on the half-title: "June 1, 2006. To Hugh, Best Wishes - Sherman L. Fleek Lt. Col. US Army (Ret). It is important to place the Mormon Battalion fully into the context of the Mexican War itself. Many authors have failed to adequately link the battalion's history with Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West or the strategic political and military dramas unfolding in Washington, Texas, northern Mexico and Mexico City. Previous writers and historians of the battalion, for the most part, have been silent on the causes of the war and the campaigns in Texas and Mexico, and say little of the campaign in Texas and Mexico, and say little of the campaign for New Mexico and California, where the Mormon Battalion played a small but essential part.

Small promotional piece for the Yosemite ski school that offers descriptions and rates, with head shots of some of the instructors. First protected as a park in 1864, Yosemite is known the world over for its Big Trees, waterfalls, rock faces, and wilderness areas. "The Yosemite Ski School presents its expert technical information in an understandable manner and its system is universally accepted as the simplest in principle, the easiest to grasp and the most practical for all snow conditions.

Philadelphia, PA: W.B. Saunders Company, 2000. First Edition. William M. Winn. 554pp. Quarto [27 cm] Red cloth with gilt titles to front board and backstrip. Near fine with no marks or writing.

San Francisco: Thomas C. Russell, 1919. 372pp. Quarto [26 cm] 1/4 brown cloth over gray boards with a paper label on the backstrip. Very good. Minor wear to boards with the front hinge starting. Fold-out present at the rear with a closed tear. Complete with all ten colored tipped in plates. This edition was limited to 250, numbered copies that are signed by the publisher. British merchant Alexander Forbes wrote the first book published in English relating exclusively to California. His narrative, as observed by Hubert Howe Bancroft, was not so much history as "a presentation by an intelligent man of business of the country's actual condition, capabilities, institutions, and prospects." His book, more than any other, made California known to the English-speaking world and spurred on both European and American interest in controlling this remote Mexican outpost. Zamorano Eighty: 38. Nice collection of Western Montana views by the Butte based photographer, N.A. Forsyth. With eleven early views of Morrison Caves, now Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and seven views of a swollen Clark Fork, showing the high-water of the 1908 floods. Norman A. Forsyth (1869-1949) was a photographer who operated a studio out of Butte, Montana, from 1904-1930, working for Underwood and Underwood and later Keystone View Company.

Salt Lake City: Fox & Symons, 1882. Carte de Visite. Albumen photograph [10 cm x 6 cm] on a white gilt bordered mount [10.5 cm x 6.5 cm] Fox & Symons backstamp. Nice condition and contrasts. Fox & Symons was a partnership of Alexander Fox (1828-1882) and Charles William Symons (1845 -1934) who's studio opened in 1874. Symons was born in England in 1845, and left for Salt Lake City in 1864, where he opened a studio in 1869. Alexander Fox had left England for Australia in the early 1850s in search of gold, instead he took up daguerreotypy. He was briefly a photographer in San Rafael, California before moving to Salt Lake City. In the fall of 1879 Fox & Symons bought out the studio of C. W. Carter and operated it as a branch (Before opening his own studio, Symons worked for Carter). Fox & Symons were active until 1906 when Henry Newell purchased the studio's property.
