Description:
New York: Citadel Press, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An early anthology of the Beat writers, including Jack Kerouac, Carl Solomon, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs (and William Lee), along with literary criticism by Kenneth Rexroth, and others. 384 pages. A book that tells a story about Larry McMurtry as a book scout. While he was also a Pulitzer Prize- and Academy Award-winning author, he was, most of the time, a bookseller first. This copy belonged to the acclaimed Texan Rolling Stone journalist Grover Lewis, who was a friend of McMurtry going back to their college days. Apparently, Lewis acquired this book in 1958, when he wrote his name on the front free endpaper. At some later point, the book ended up with an antiquarian bookseller, who catalogued it as having a "name inked on front free endpaper." Somehow, McMurtry either found this book in a bookstore or in one of many of the bookstores he bought out in their entirety. McMurtry saw his friend's name in the book,…

Description:
London: Cuckoo Press, 2015. First hardcover edition. Hardcover. Fine. The first book in Elena Ferrante's worldwide bestselling series, the Neapolitan Quartet, published here in a stunningly beautiful signed, limited edition of 126 copies, comprising the entire first hardcover edition in English. Essentially, this edition offers the only obtainable signed books anywhere in the world by Ferrante. She has signed no other limited editions, nor has she ever done a book signing. Next to Richard Fariña, who died on the way home from his first book signing in 1966, signed Ferrante first editions may be the scarcest autographed modern first editions. In the 21 January 2013 issue of the New Yorker magazine ("Women on the Verge") James Wood wrote, "Elena Ferrante, or 'Elena Ferrante,' is one of Italy's best-known least-known contemporary writers. She is the author of several remarkable, lucid, austerely honest novels... Compared with Ferrante, Thomas Pynchon is a publicity profligate. It's assumed that Elena…

An explanation of the racial types used as the basis of Malvina Hoffman's massive project to make more than 100 life-sized bronzes of human types for the Field Museum in Chicago. The scientific text is uncomfortably close to eugenics and is a touch condescending to non-white peoples. 40 pages, plus nine photogravure plates of the bronzes and a plan of the hall in which they were exhibited. Anthropology Leaflet 30. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in stapled wrappers (pamphlet). Description:
Baltimore, MD: Printed for the Author by Joseph Robinson, 1818. First Edition. Leather bound. Good. A two-volume set on auction law from the library of Millard Fillmore's first legal partnership, Clary and Fillmore, with Fillmore's surname in gilt on the spines and with a rare example of Fillmore's bookplate affixed to the pastedown of the second volume. Catherine Parisian located just one example of Millard Fillmore's bookplate during the compilation of the annotated catalogue of the library that Fillmore built during his presidency, The First White House Library (Penn State University Press, 2010). That bookplate, for Fillmore's miscellaneous library, is in the collection of the Grolier Club. That plate was reproduced in the Grolier Club's book Lasting Impressions, the 2004 catalog of an exhibit of the Club Library's "treasures." That bookplate was also reproduced in The First White House Library as figure 9. This legal set has an example of Fillmore's law library bookplate, which is…

Captioned in the negative, "L.W.B. 9.14.95"; 2) Lake Worth with the Royal Poinciana Hotel in the distance. The negatives these views were printed from are of somewhat unusual size, measuring roughly 4-3/4 by 7-3/4 inches. All but one view have a horizontal orientation.
