This copy belonged to the acclaimed Texan Rolling Stone journalist Grover Lewis, who was a friend of McMurtry going back to their college days. Apparently, Lewis acquired this book in 1958, when he wrote his name on the front free endpaper. At some later point, the book ended up with an antiquarian bookseller, who catalogued it as having a "name inked on front free endpaper." One of the illustrations is a cut-out in the shape of a squash that folds out to reveal additional illustrations and text. A bookmark-like illustration, handcolored and assembled from two pieces of paper in the shape of a hand holding a leaf, is laid in. Fernández de Juan is a Cuban doctor and writer, the daughter of the Cuban writers Roberto Fernández Retamar and Adelaida de Juan, both Ediciones Vigía authors themselves. 67 pages. 8 by 11 inches. A two-volume set on auction law from the library of Millard Fillmore's first legal partnership, Clary and Fillmore, with Fillmore's surname in gilt on the spines and with a rare example of Fillmore's bookplate affixed to the pastedown of the second volume. Catherine Parisian located just one example of Millard Fillmore's bookplate during the compilation of the annotated catalogue of the library that Fillmore built during his presidency, The First White House Library (Penn State University Press, 2010). That bookplate, for Fillmore's miscellaneous library, is in the collection of the Grolier Club.
