Description:
London: John Russell Smith, 1859 One of 250 copies. An excellent facsimile of Schreiber I, the first edition of the most popular and best known of block book texts, published in the Netherlands around 1466-70. There are nine known complete or partially complete copies of this edition. . Publisher's brown morocco over marbled boards. . Tall folio. Spine, corners, board edges rubbed, intermittent light foxing. A good, sound copy. Block books or xylographica were for a long time believed to precede printing from moveable type, invented by Gutenberg in the 1450s. Their crude appearance and the style of the woodcuts suggest an earlier date. But Allan H. Stevenson, writing in the 1960s, concluded from a study of the watermarks, that nearly all of them date from the 1460s or later. He did, however, establish the date for the earliest one, the Netherlandish Apocalypse as c. 1451-52. The latest block books, according to Stevenson, can be dated up to around 1530. Description:
Boston: Irving P. Fox, 1898 First edition. The Tragedy of a Widow's Third critiques unequal inheritance laws that left women, like the protagonist of the novel, impoverished after the deaths of their loved ones. The "widow's third" of the title refers to the portion of a couple's wealth left to a widow after a husband's death in the state of Massachusetts. The wealth accrued by a married woman was also often legally counted as her husband's, which could result in her own property being stripped from her after his death. Other parts of the United States (mostly states and territories in the west including Arizona, California, and Colorado) guaranteed a widow half of the couple's wealth, but it wasn't until 1902 that an equal guardianship bill passed in Massachusetts. The bill was introduced by George Howard Fall, the husband of Anna Christy Fall (1855 – 1930).. Publisher's red cloth with printed paper spine label. Twelvemo. With three plates (including frontispiece) by Vesper L. George. Some wear and… Read More

Description:
London: Fanfrolico Press, 1927 First edition. The press's scarce fourth book. One of 155 copies printed at the Curwen Press. Signed by Partridge. Quarter vellum over brown paper boards, gilt spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Octavo. Photogravure portrait, and etching of Landor's birthplace. Some fading to top of front board. Otherwise a beautiful copy, tight and clean. Landor (1781-1869) was the youngest brother of Walter Savage Landor. He wrote five tragedies, of which one, Count Arezzi (1822), sold brilliantly while it was mistaken for Byron's work. Partridge remarks in his prefatory note: "That so fine a writer as Robert Landor should have fallen into an almost complete neglect is inexplicable on literary grounds…Of men who, since 1700 (and I might add since 1600), have published their work only to attract little immediate notice and to become very rapidly forgotten, I know of none that can approach in merit, whether it be in prose or verse, this younger brother of Walter Savage Landor."

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1874 First edition of this collection of fable-like short stories illustrating economic principles. In the preface, Fawcett credits Harriet Martineau for "the idea, which she made so popular thirty years ago, of hiding the powder, Political Economy, in the raspberry jam of a story." . Octavo. With a text diagram. Millicent Garrett Fawcett, LL.D. (1847 – 1929), was one of the most important figures in the women's suffrage movement both in Britain and across the world. She supported a wide variety of causes including equal education, equal pay, ending the exploitation of working women, and creating legislation against child marriage and sex trafficking. Early in her career, Fawcett founded Newnham College, a women's college at Cambridge, and supported early bids to open Cambridge degrees to women. She was also a supporter of adult education who served as a governor of Bedford College, a teacher training school; in 1899, the University of St. Andrews awarded her an honorary LL.D.… Read More

Description:
Erlangen: verlegts Wolfgang Walther, 1768 First edition. Contemporary sprinkled boards, edges stained red. . Octavo. Minor rubbing to extremities, a little browning to title-page, but a fine, clean copy. This is not a Rousseauean sequel to Emile, as the title might suggest, but a novel and a handbook for modern pedagogues, which ran into several editions. Feder added another book with the same title in 1774, but this work is complete in itself, as intended. In the preface he expresses the view that "Rousseau's Emil does not deserve to be burnt, but to be cauterized and moulded into a new work." Johann Georg Heinrich Feder (1740-1821) was a professor at the University of Göttingen. Along with Christoph Meiners, he was a leading light in the anti-Kantian school known as the Popularphilosophen, which emerged in Göttingen in the late 1780s and was responsible for the Philosophische Bibliothek, which ran from 1788 to 1791 and was the most prominent source in Germany for foreign and especially British… Read More

Feijóo, author of Teatro critico (1726-1739) and Cartas erudias (1742-1760), attacked the ignorance and superstition of his countrymen. Though the immediate response to Feijóo's work was outrage, his services to the cause of knowledge were ultimately honored in his lifetime. .
