Description:
New York: Mason Brothers, 1857. Hardcover. Very Good. Coffin, Fred[erick] M.. Sixteenmo, 292 pp. Early reprint of a children's book by Fannie Fern, the pen name of Sara Willis (1811-1872) who struggled as a young widow to provide for her children by writing, eventually becoming the highest-paid columnist in the United States, being paid $100 per week for her column in the New York Ledger. In addition to being a columnist, Ms. Willis wrote several books, including others for children entitled "Fern Leaves from Fanny's Portfolio" and "Little Ferns for Fannie's Little Friends" which were wildly popular; this book must have been published directly afterwards, for in the author's Preface she writes: "Since 'Little Ferns' was published, I have had many letters, and messages, from little children all over the country, asking me 'to write them soon another little book of stories.' Here is one that I have prepared for you and them - because I made it to read when you are out of school, and want to be… Read more

Camden, Maine: Down East Books, 1998. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Kent, Rockwell; Muniak, Susan (Photography). Octavo size, 96 pp., inscribed by Scott Ferris and Ellen Pearce. Inscribed by co-author and Kent specialist Scott R. Ferris to Riette Kahn, who with her husband, Albert, is mentioned on page 86 of the book as owners of "From Palmer Hill" and friends of Rockwell Kent; included is a TLS by Scott R. Ferris presenting the book to Riette Kahn. Also signed by co-author Ellen Pearce (Rockwell Kent's granddaughter). Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was an American painter and illustrator who bridged the artistic gap between Victorian and Modern art; highly regarded, he is perhaps best known today for his illustrations, particularly in books such as "Moby Dick" and "Beowulf". He developed sympathy with the social and economic welfare of the working man and became increasingly supportive of Soviet-American friendship, thus becoming a target of Joe McCarthy and even having a travel ban… Read more

Description:
New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1966. 2nd Printing. Leather bound. Fine. Karlin, Eugene. Octavo size, 93 pp. Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) was a Persian mathematician and astronomer, best known for his work on cubic equations and for designing the Jalali calendar; many poems are attributed to him (though with much skepticism and uncertainty in the academic world) in the quatrain style. English poet Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883) created the first and most famous translation of Khayyam's poetry, "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam", translated from Farsi to English, greatly popular among the Pre-Raphaelites during the Orientalism period at the end of the nineteenth century. This text is accompanied by alluring line-drawings by Eugene Karlin (1918-2003), an illustrator and painter who created drawings for magazines and books, as well as landscape paintings; his delicate linework provides a gentle visual to the poetry. This edition is stated second printing; however, it is bound in full morocco as the… Read more
