The spine and edges are lightly toned, covers have some soiling, and pastedowns and endpapers a touch of foxing.

In 1929, along with two sons of Mary Roberts Rinehart, Stanley M. Rinehart Jr. and Frederick R. Rinehart, John Farrar co-founded the publishing house Farrar and Rinehart. This volume is bumped and lightly worn on the spine ends and the text leaves have some very light perimeter toning. The dust jacket, is edge worn with chips and tears. There is an irregular 1/4" chip in the middle of the spine and the spine lettering is completely faded.

Atheneum, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Signed. Inscribed and SIGNED by Penelope Farmer on the second endpaper and additionally SIGNED, without inscription, by Penelope Farmer on the title page. The volume has a water stain on the upper portion of the spine and there is a stamped school name from the state of New Mexico near the top of the front endpaper. The unclipped dust jacket, now protected in a sleeve, has a lot of edge wear to include chips and creases, and there is a nearly a 1 1/2" closed tear on the bottom of the front panel near the spine. The water stain has caused most of the red in the author's name on the spine to change to a pale yellow-orange. The water discoloration is most noticeable on the verso of the spine.

The volume is perimeter toned, bumped on the spine ends, and is soiled and lightly scuffed on the rear panel. The text leaves are lightly toned and there is a short inscription on the front endpaper. The dust jacket has chips (one of 1/2" depth x 1" long on the top of the rear panel), closed tears, and an "L" shaped split running through the words "The" and "House" on the spine crown. The jacket, protected in a sleeve, also has a lightly sunned spine. This is a book publication of the Seventh Day Adventists.

The unclipped dust jacket (priced at $2.00 on the spine) is edge rubbed with two chips on the top edge of the front panel (largest chip is an irregular 1/2"x1/2" piece), a 2" closed tear on the top edge of the rear panel, and soiled (heavily so on the rear panel).

The volume is bumped on the spine ends and is lightly shelf rubbed. The unclipped dust jacket, protected in a Brodart sleeve, is lightly toned, rubbed, soiled on the spine and there is wrinkling and a crease on the top of the front panel near the spine. On the front flap someone, in ink, has lightly crossed out "first" and written in "second" in the sentence, "In his fifty first book..".

The unclipped dust jacket, sleeved in a Brodart, is soiled on the rear panel, edge rubbed, nicked on the corners and has a 3/4"long by 1/4" deep chip on the spine crown, as well as a 1/8" x 1/4" chip on the top of the rear panel.

The unclipped dust jacket, protected in a Brodart sleeve, has light edge wrinkles, a gently toned spije and the a bump on the spine tail corresponding to the one on the book's spine.
