Autograph Letter Signed. Richmond, Virginia. Apr. 16, 1846. 3pp.plus address leaf. To his brother Joseph, East Thomaston, Maine. Some staining to last leaf, a couple of small holes at folds, small piece missing from last page affecting a couple of words, corner edge crease, normal aging; otherwise very good. About to sail his merchant ship to England, Farwell (1812-1893) fears imminent war with Britain over the Oregon dispute would make him a Prisoner of War."…As for coming home to spend the summer…I have no one here to take the Boat and she will be ready for Sea before you receive this…I have made nothing this winter and cannot afford to stay at home but mean to go to London and back as soon as possible… I really have some [qualms?] as I should not think strange if I were a Prisoner of War before I get home. Description:
8vo contemporary ½ calf with marbled boards, 454 pp. Some minor wear to binding, a couple of chips and niches to covers. Hinges show slight cracking, but very limited and still sound. Bookplate to front pastedown, and some very minor aging. Very good overall. Fearon came to America on sort of a fact-finding tour to inspect agricultural possibilities for people interested in coming to America. The information he provides on all sorts of economic issues is impressive. Since farming was a keen interest to him and the people he represented, he gives a lot of information on the differences in agricultural land prices of various places. While Fearon does mention some good things about America, much of his commentary is negative. Fearon had a strongly negative reaction to slavery, and talks about it in much detail. He even argues that in the so-called free states, freedom is a myth for Blacks. “Although New York is a free state, it is such only on parchment: Black Americans are in practically and… Read More

Letter sheets (8" x 12") 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds, mostly archival tape, but some regular tape too, which has caused a little browning in areas, long tear obscures writers signature, but partially visible, creased, normal aging and browning, remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission, and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson (1803-1880), although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However, on the back page, a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer, and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case, the author would suggest a far… Read More

Some sources suggest there are one or two other plates in this title, but only the portraits are bound in this volume. The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was the first overland expedition by the United States to go to the Pacific coast. This was an extremely important expedition because it laid the groundwork for the Western Expansion, and gave our government a first hand account of the resources we picked up with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, but was greatly assisted by Sacajawea, their Native American guide and translator. Description:
Philadelphia: James Sharan, 1812. 12mo, period full calf, leather spine label, one wood engraved portrait (of two), 300 pp. Top cover detached, and rear hinge is cracked, lacking one frontispiece engraving, foxing throughout, some staining, ownership signature on front pastedown. Howes indicates that some copies of this title have a second title page, this copy does not. This work is a follow-up to book published in 1809 on the Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804-1806). Commisioned by President Thomas Jefferson, this expedition generated a lot of interest in the explorations and findings of Lewis and Clark. While this work was treated with some disdain by scholars, becuase it was often a rehashing of the material of Gass, Lewis & Clark, and Mackenzie's writings, it did help shape impressions of America during this period.

4to, magazine, glossy covers, illustrated, 64 pp. Some spine and extremity wear, but still a very respectable cover, contents with normal aging and browning; very good. The cover features Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott, which set the stage for a return bout on June 25, 1948. After a difficult first fight, which many believed Walcott won, Louis won by a knockout in the second bout. This issue provides a lot of information on Joe Louis, including a detailed account of his ring earnings. Perhaps the significance of this contest was that it would be only the third time in history that two African Americans would fight for the heavyweight title. However, boxing’s' color line was not as rigid as some other sports, and by the late 1940s there had been several African American world champions.
