Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1914. Some scuffing to binding, a few plates lightly offset, partly cracked at center but binding strong; a few splits and light wear to slipcase. Rare with the original slipcase. 8vo. 245 pages. Complete with 23 color reproductions of Cubist and Post-Impressionist Paintings, all mounted on card; and 46 half-tone illustrations. Original cloth-backed printed boards, top edges gilt; slipcase with printed paper spine label. First edition. The lawyer, art collector, author and critic Arthur Jerome Eddy was a key figure in the first generation of Modern Art collectors. This, his most important book, is the first American work to promote these artists, and the first work to promote Wassily Kandinsky. Much of the information in the book was gained from the artists themselves, as Eddy was actively studying and collecting their works. Kandinsky had only been represented by one painting in the Armory Show the previous year: four are illustrated here ('Village Street'; Landscape…

New York: P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, 2011. A near-fine copy. 13.25 x 9.5 inches. 248 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original white wrappers. First edition. "The attacks of September 11, 2001 were among the most pictured disasters in history, yet they remain, a decade later, underrepresented in cultural discourse--particularly within the realm of contemporary art. Responding to these conditions, MoMA PS1 curator Peter Eleey brings together more than 70 works by 41 artists--many made prior to 9/11--to explore the attacks' enduring resonance. Eschewing both images of the event itself and art made directly in response, the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue provide a subjective framework within which to reflect upon the attacks and their aftermath, and explore the ways that they have altered how we see and experience the world in their wake. Opening on the tenth anniversary of the attacks, September 11 includes works by Diane Arbus, John Chamberlain, Bruce Conner, Christo, Ellsworth…

Description:
Steidl, 2021. New, in publisher's mailing box. Three volumes, folio. Cloth; slipcase. "The three volumes of The Outlands are drawn from photographs that William Eggleston (born 1939) made on color transparency film from 1969 to 1974, which formed the basis for John Szarkowski's seminal exhibition of Eggleston's work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1976 with the accompanying book William Eggleston's Guide. However, with the exception of a couple of alternate versions, none of the photographs in The Outlands have been published previously. "The result is revelatory. Starting at almost the exact point on the same street in suburban Memphis where Eggleston made his famous photograph of a tricycle, the work follows a route through the back roads to old Mississippi where he was raised. What is disclosed is a sublime use of pure color hovering in semi-detachment from the forms he records. At the time, Eggleston was photographing a world that was already vanishing. Today, this final installment…

Issued as the companion to Eggleston's seminal 1976 exhibition at MoMA, a landmark in the history of photography. "I once heard William Eggleston say that the nominal subjects of his pictures were no more than a pretext for the making of color photographs-the Degas position. I did not believe him, although I can believe that it might be an advantage to think so, or to pretend to think so. To me it seems that the pictures reproduced here are about the photographer's home, about his place, in both important meanings of that word. One might say about his identity" (John Szarkowski, pp. 5-6). "As pictures ... these seem to me perfect: irreducible surrogates for the experience they…
