(227 mm), pp. 389, [1] with 8 wood engraved plate illustrations. Plates are counted with the pagination. Title page contains a small illustration of "a peasant woman of Livinallungo." 18 wood-engravings are also included with the text. Bound in publisher's illustrated cloth. Binding shows rubbing, wear and soiling. Upper corner of the spine near the rear cover is chipped (1.5 cm x 7 mm). An illustrated bookplate is located on the inside front cover - "Kenneth Dodge Wood;" (note: someone by this name (b. 1861 - d. 1938) was secretary of the Central Ohio Paper Company. End papers show toning and light scattered foxing. Interior pages are mildly toned. Faint creasing is visible to the upper corner of p. 165. Small ink spot on outer fore-edge of book block; bibliographical note written in an early hand on front blank free fly leaf. Part of Elzevir’s republic series. Contains a collection of writings on Switzerland relating to history, geography, travel etc., including Josias Simmler’s "De Republica Helvetiorum libri duo" (first published 1576), a work by Daniel L’Ermite, and three other works. Three editions were published in 1627. This is the 2nd edition with fleurions on p. 4 and p. 535. [Willems 278; Berghman 1763; Rahir 242].

With frontispiece of Mary, John Evelyn’s wife; and (in the back) a fold out pedigree chart of the Evelyn lineage. Volume III, pp. xii, 399, [1]. Volume IV, pp. iv, 448. Bound in later half red calf with gilt spines, marbled boards and sewn-in red ribbon bookmarkers. Top edge is gilt. Binding is in superb condition with only slight signs of wear. The interior contains a few miniscule marginal tears; a possible 16 mm tear (very neatly sealed) is present on the outer edge of the title page to volume I; a faint stress mark or crease is present to the frontis (volume I).
