Original printed wrappers. = A detailed and well-illustrated study by the German anatomist, neurologist and herpetologist Ludwig Edinger (1855-1918). Thirteen years later Edinger moved to the University of Frankfurt which he had co-founded, and which was later renamed Goethe University. "Edinger is credited with coining the terms gnosis and praxis. These terms were later used in psychological descriptions of agnosia and apraxia. Also, he was the first to describe the ventral and dorsal spinocerebellar tracts and to distinguish the paleocerebellum from the neocerebellum (Wikipedia). Uncut. A very good, clean copy. London, J. Ridgway, 1815-1847. 34 volumes. Large 8vo (24.2 x 15.3 cm). Text and 2,707 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates and three plain engravings for a total of 2,710 plates, plus nine hand-coloured engraved plates in the appendix. Very nice half green morocco bindings by Bernard Middleton. Spines with five raised bands, gilt floral vignettes and title. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. = It is very uncommon to see a complete set on the market, consisting of all volumes with all the plates as well as the rare appendix by Lindley. Nissen only quotes 2702 plates; Stafleu and Cowan have a more precise collation, although also incorrect. The Botanical Register was founded by Sydenham Edwards in 1815 to promote an understanding of ornamental flowers cultivated in British gardens. It concerns mostly Mediterranean and exotic species. Description:
Egypt, Greece, unpublished, 1847. Various sizes, up to 10.2 x 429.4 cm. Eight original sketched panoramas, mounted on seven larger papers. = From just before photography took over, this is set of eight suites of fine, detailed drawings of landscapes along the river Nile. All in great detail: buildings (including mosques), trees, and sailing vessels are depicted. These drawings stand in a long tradition among sailors and cartographers to chart coasts and waters, but they are also of historical importance, and, if skilfully done, are, in addition, true pieces of art, as is the case here. The artist added some occasional comments in German or French. This include dates and places. The following are present: (1) A very long (over four metres!) panorama of a lengthy stretch of the Nile shore. The first 20 centimetres are hand-coloured, the rest is in black-and-white only. (2) Two views (one hand-coloured) near Esné (Esna), dated 17 Jänner [1]847. (3) One of Selseleh (Gebel al Silsila), about… Read More
