Description:
1856. Grant, Robert Edmond (1793-1874). Portrait photograph, from Maull and Polyblank's Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities (1856-60). 305 x 254 mm. Faint stain in left margin, but very good. Portrait of Scottish comparative anatomist Robert E. Grant, a student of Cuvier, Geoffroy St. Hilaire and Lamarck, and an early supporter of the concept of the transmutation of species as set forth in the writings of Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin. In the 1820s Grant began a study of sea sponges, and published several papers demonstrating that these organisms were animal rather than vegetable in nature. In these studies Grant was assisted by the young Charles Darwin, who was then living in Edinburgh. [Grant and Darwin] would often go out on long walks together at the Firth of Forth, discussing marine biology and collecting marine animals. Darwin started dissecting some of the specimens they collected, although rather poorly. Grant taught him how to make observations in nature and how to spot important… Read More

Redhill: H. M. Stationery Office, 1920. Patent for the Flip-Flop Circuit, the Basis for Electronic Memory Eccles, William Henry (1875-1966) and Frank Wilfred Jordan (1882- ). Patent specification 148,582 . . . improvements in ionic relays. [Redhill: Printed for His Majesty's Stationery Office by Love & Malcomson, Ltd., 1920.] 5pp. Folding plate. Errata slip tipped to first leaf. 267 x 195 mm. Unbound. Light wear along gutter margin and fore-edge, but very good. Stamps of the Belgian Bureau voor den Industrieelen Eigendom Bibliotheek. First Edition. On June 21, 1918 British physicists William Henry Eccles and Frank Wilfred Jordan, professors of engineering at London's City and Guilds Technical College, filed a patent for "Improvements in Ionic Relays"—the first flip-flop circuit. The device, originally called the Eccles-Jordan trigger circuit, consisted of two active elements (vacuum tubes). The schematic drawing illustrating Eccles and Jordan's patent shows two flip-flops, "one drawn as a cascade… Read More

Description:
1953. Eckert, J. Presper. Publication form. Checking circuits and diagnostic routines. Dittoed typescript, stapled. N.p., March 24, 1953. 13 sheets. 280 x 217 mm. Fine. Dittoed typescript of a paper published in the IRE Convention Record. Part 7-Electronic Computers. March 23-26, 1953. The paper describes the types of faults that can occur in a computing system and how to check it to see if it is working properly; it also compares the advantages and disadvantages of internal checking circuits versus external diagnostic programs. A brief history of checking and diagnostic procedures is included from the time of the differential analyzers through ENIAC, BINAC, and finally to UNIVAC; this may be the only work on this subject. Eckert was at this time the director of engineering at the Eckert-Mauchly Division of Remington Rand. Origins of Cyberspace 1195.

Thomas J. Watson Astronomical Computing Bureau, 1940. Eckert, Wallace John (1902-1971). Punched card methods in scientific computation. [New York:] Thomas J. Watson Astronomical Computing Bureau, 1940. Original bright orange cloth. ix, 136pp. Text illustrations. (238 x 163 mm). Ex-library card tipped to front paste-down. Library stamps on title page. "One of the chief proponents of punched-card computation in science was Wallace J. Eckert (no relation to Pres Eckert), as a professor of astronomy at Columbia University. Eckert had become aware of the possibilities of punched-card calculation through visits to the IBM-Columbia University Statistical Bureau, established in 1928; he was also probably inspired by reports from the American astronomer E.W. Brown, who in 1928-1929 had observed L.J. Comrie's use of a Hollerith tabulating system to calculate the positions of the moon. In 1934 Eckert established the Thomas J. Watson Astronomical Computing Bureau at Columbia, which he equipped with modified… Read More

Soc. 54 (1942). 491-504pp. London: Taylor & Francis, 1942. 260 x 182 mm. Original printed wrappers, a little worn. Very good copy, inscribed by Eddington on the front wrapper: "With grateful acknowledgements, A. S. Eddington." The recipient was American physicist Raymond T. Birge (1887-1980), whom Eddington had cited in his paper; see below. Birge's signature on the front wrapper; pencil markings and annotations by Birge on several pages. First Separate Edition. Eddington's greatest contributions to physics were in astrophysics (particularly stellar structure) and relativity theory. His intuitive insight into the profound problems of nature, coupled with his mastery of the mathematical tools, led him to illuminating results in a wide range of problems: the motions and distribution of the stars, the internal constitution of the stars,… Read More

Dublin: DAIS, 1943. Eddington, Arthur (1882-1944). The combination of relativity theory and quantum theory. Offprint from Comm. Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Series A, no. 2 (1943). 8vo. [2], 69, [1]pp. 258 x 182 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy. "Nat. Phil. Departmental Library" inscribed on title. First Separate Edition. Eddington made significant contributions to relativity theory, publishing the first account of general relativity in English (1918) and establishing a bridge between relativity and quantum theory in his Mathematical Theory of Relativity (1923), a work that Einstein called "the finest presentation of the subject in any language" (DSB). His last years were devoted to his vision (which he called "Bottom's dream") of "a harmonization of quantum physics and relativity. The difficulties were immense and, as we now know, the greatest complexities of nuclear physics and subatomic particles were not yet discovered. But he took hurdle after hurdle as he saw them, with… Read More

Arsphenamine was the first modern chemotherapeutic agent. Manufactured by the German chemical company Hoechst, Salvarsan quickly became the most widely prescribed drug in the world. It was the first blockbuster drug, and remained the most effective drug for syphilis until penicillin became available in the 1940s" (Garrison-Morton.com). .

Description:
(1) First Edition, journal issue. The brilliant follow-up to Einstein's landmark 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect. In the 1905 paper Einstein had explained the photoelectric effect—the emission of electrons from a metal when irradiated by light—by making the revolutionary proposal that light, rather than consisting of continuous waves, was instead made up of discrete particles of energy ("light quanta"), which transferred their entire payload of energy to an electron on impact. In the 1905 paper Einstein made use of Planck's mathematical formula for blackbody radiation, which had introduced the concept of energy quanta, but he was only able to derive part of the formula. In his 1906 paper Einstein "used his statistical mechanics to demonstrate that when light interacts with matter, Planck's entire formula can arise only from the existence of light quanta—not from waves" (Cassidy; emphasis ours). Einstein had realized, as he stated in the present paper, that "'Planck's theory makes implicit… Read More
