This was the catalog for Eggleston's controversial show at the Museum of Modern Art, which was panned by many critics for its use of color. Considered a breakthrough in photographic art, see Roth pp. 234-5, Parr & Badger v.1 p. 265. They wrote that this show and book 'heralded the birth of colour photography, or more accurately, it marked the moment when it was perceived as artistically respectable.' They add that Szarkowski's essay here is one of his most adroit. Condition of this book: Minor spine slant, age toning at edges. Boards near fine with a few faint areas of rubbing at… Read More

Contrejour, Paris, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. [PIERRE ET GILLLES] L'Odyssee Imaginaire, with introduction by Michel Beltrami, large quarto, first edition, Contrejour, 1988, pp. 78, white cloth boards, double-sided plates. Text en francais. The French photographic team known only by their first names produces highly stylized fantasies that comment on iconic images from Hollywood and the rest of the media, using models that are caked with makeup in a set loaded with hearts and flowers, even if there’s a dead body on the floor. It’s all so sweet. We get the feeling these photos are loaded with inside jokes involving the old Hollywood studio system, but much of the humor flies past our 21st-century heads. This is their first book. Condition of this book: Dust jacket shows light wear, tanning, no tears. Pages clean and tight. Size: Quarto. 78. Text is in French.
