Amsterdam: Scheltema & Holkema, 1973. Hercules Seghers. AN ABSOLUTELY COMPLETE COPY of the beautifully-produced standard catalogue raisonné of Seghers' etchings. Includes a clothbound folio text volume (vii, 136 pp) with the catalogue raisonné itself (and the catalogue raisonné of the etchings of Johannes Ruischer); 6 very large loose color plates; 104 smaller (but still quite large) loose color plates; and--particular to this copy--a high-resolution black & white photograph of one of the etchings reproduced in one of the plates. Errata slip and old purchase receipt laid in. Printed on fine paper throughout. Large oblong folio. Housed in the original cloth folding case, with ties. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. A scarce and extremely important catalogue raisonné, devoted to a unique and extremely important printmaker.

Barcelona: Seix Barral, 1931. First and only edition of the best monograph on Soler i Rovirosa (1836-1900), the great Catalan set designer of the late 19th century. Profusely illustrated throughout. 43 beautifully produced full-page plates of set designs, several printed in color. FROM A TOTAL EDITION OF ONLY 310 COPIES, this is ONE OF ONLY THREE (3) ON JAPAN PAPER WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED WATERCOLOR BY SOLER I ROVIROSA. The highly-finished watercolor measures 12 x 23 cm and depicts a set design (perhaps for "Miss Robinson"). It is signed by Soler i Rovirosa with his monogram, and is annotated Barna (i.e., Barcelona), 17 Junio 1894. It is on fine wove paper, mounted on a blank sheet of Japan paper. There are additional sketches and annotations on the back. Original watercolors by Soler i Rovirosa are very rare, especially signed. Folio, loose as issued in original wraps. Fine and bright, with no defects. An outstanding item.

Paris: [Imprimerie Abécé], 1950. FIRST EDITION OF ELUARD'S RAREST BOOK, WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWING BY MAURICE MENDJIZKI. Includes a 5-page poem by Eluard and 31 extremely high-quality (Jacomet process?) full-page reproductions of drawings by Mendjizki depicting the suffering and heroism of the Warsaw Ghetto and the Uprising. Dedicated to the artist's son Claude, shot by the Nazis in 1944 for being a member of the Resistance. THIS FIRST EDITION STRICTLY LIMITED TO 100 COPIES, of which this is number 100, SIGNED BY ELUARD AND MENDJIZKY AND CONTAINING AN WONDERFUL ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWING BY MENDJIZKY, depicting three people trying to sleep in very cramped quarters (200 additional unsigned copies were also printed, 100 in French and 100 in Yiddish, which are not part of the first edition.) Printed on fine wove paper. 4to. Original wraps FINE AND BRIGHT, LIKE NEW WITH NO DEFECTS, IN THE ORIGINAL BOARD CHEMISE AND SLIPCASE. A wonderful example of extremely rare and haunting 20th-century Judaica.

From a total edition of 290 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 25 COPIES PRINTED ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER. This copy, furthermore, includes a SUITE OF THE SEVEN LITHOGRAPHS ON ANTIQUE JAPANESE PAPER, WITH EACH OF THE LITHOGRAPHS SIGNED IN PENCIL BY BRANGWYN, AND A SUITE OF THE 43 WOODCUTS IN FIRST STATE, ALSO ON ANTIQUE JAPANESE PAPER. While he never won any prestigious prizes, he achieved great success as a popular writer, finally churning out over six hundred books--many of which sold extremely well. La Torera is among his earliest works, written while the author still had serious literary pretensions.
