[Girls' Education] Original cross-stitch alphabet sampler from two 8-year old girls. 1814. In frame: 15.5 x 20.5". Alphabet cross-stitched in capital and lower case letters. Vowels, numbers 0-9, and floral designs in backstitch. Girls' names Verna L Haywood and Elizabeth Hope stitched below along with "at best 1814", "Age eight years," and "Give thanks to the Lord". This piece has interestingly been worked by both girls. The fabric upon which they stitched have been sewn together in a vertical line down the center. The stiches on either side are distinct; the capital letters on the right half, for instance, are generally stitched in a more straight line, while the letters on the left side have greater variation in height.Samplers were valuable parts of girls' education from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, as it demonstrated both their skill in needlepoint and their achievements in literacy. From the 1800s, the very first schools and academies for young women in America had their students create… Read More

Description:
Flight. No. 63 (No.11, Vol. II). March 12, 1910, London, UK. 197 pages. 8.5" x 12" inches. Early aviation weekly magazine that acted as the official organ of the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom. Contains multiple articles introducing and analyzing airplane models, such as the Wright biplane, Macfie British Aeroplane, Avis Monoplane, and more. This was clearly a highly inventive time in the aeronautical field, with a multitude of companies producing these rudimentary single passenger planes for hobbyists, such as the likely readership of this magazine. Advertisements for fledgling companies looking to break into the field are littered throughout the magazine. There is also a segment titled: Aviation News of the Week, where stories of individual pilots are published, regarding their mishaps or successes in the field of flight. The overall tone of this magazine has a quaintness to it, with the Flight community being close-knit, highly enthusiastic, and a bit eccentric. This phenomenon has… Read More

Bertha Von Hillern, Early Feminist Athlete Pedestrienne- Performs in Maine. The Pedestriennes were America's forgotten superstars-a handful of late 19th century female athletes who dazzled America with their remarkable endurance-walking performances. They often performed in front of raucous crowds who paid to watch them walk on makeshift tracks set up in reconfigured theaters and open houses. Top Pedestriennes often earned more money in one week than the average American took home in a year. Newspapers reported on their achievements and interviewed their champions. Their walking outfits became fashion plates, their pictures were sold in stores and they made personal appearances as national celebrities. The Pedestriennes exploits reshaped the country's attitudes about what women could accomplish and established the foundation for modern sports, the revival of the Olympic Games and the suffragist movement. Description:
Spain-A 10 pesetas revenue stamp imprint in a license granted to a 21 year old female teacher for primary school education on vellum with ornate border, coat of arms Castilla y Leon, by order of His Majesty The King and the "Governing Queen of the Kingdom." Madrid 1891. This license was granted during the unstable period between the First and Second Republic, when the Monarchy ruled with a tenuous grasp and educational reform remained in constant flux between the agendas of liberals and conservatives. Secondary and higher education received the most true reform, however, all would later fall into the iron grasp of General Primo de Rivera and his military government in 1923. For nearly a century leading up to the time this license was issued, Spain had struggled to fulfill a promise to its people to provide education. Like most nations during the 19th century, it found the fulfillment in that promise to lie in employment of female teachers.

In order to retain Myron's assets without being outed as trans, she pretends to be his widow. Written in the form of a diary, the book is considered part of a major cultural assault on the assumed norms of gender and sexuality which swept the western world in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The book's major themes are feminism, transsexuality, American expressions of machismo and patriarchy, and deviant sexual practices, as filtered through an aggressively camp sensibility.
