Internally, both vols are clean and bright and tightly bound, with no inscriptions. The red paper wrappers are price clipped, and have moderate sunning to the spines; there is moderate rubbing at both ends of the spines and light rubbing at the corners of both jackets, and very slight creasing at the foot of the rear flap on vol 2.

The jacket has (very) minor rubbing to top edge of spine and a partial and faint horizontal crease near the top edge of the front cover and the very slightest of small bumps to the top right corner. The boards are clean and bright. Internally, the pages are clean and bright and fresh, and tightly bound.

Review copy sent by the Times Literary Supplement to the writer and reviewer Morchard Bishop (Oliver Stonor); contains four scraps of paper with notes handwritten in pencil (presumably by the reviewer), plus the original slip sent by the publishers to the TLS dated 19 April 1973. The book is in very good plus condition, with just very minor bumping to top edge of spine, and some slight spotting on the top edge of the text block. The jacket is slightly discoloured at the spine and is very slightly rubbed along bottom edge of spine and at outward top corners but overall is in very good plus condition. Internally, the book is clean and bright and tightly bound.

Jacket tanned and spotted at spine , with minor chipping to top and bottom of spine and to each of the four corners; price clipped; boards are cloth bound in blue with just some slight rubbing at the edges; some minor spotting to edges of text block. Internally, the book is in very good condition, clean and tightly bound.

Very slight bumping to both ends of spine, and to corners of boards; very slight spotting to top of text block; jacket has minor damage at the top edge, with small chips at top right of front cover and top right of spine, and various small tears across top of spine and one small tear on top edge of back cover; jacket now safely preserved in protective wrapping; jacket not price clipped. Pages clean and tightly bound.

The dark blue boards are in excellent condition, with nothing but a few very faint etched lines at the back, and one at the front, which are not echoed in the jacket and which may have been caused during the original production process. Internally the book is extremely clean, bright and fresh, and tightly bound. There are no inscriptions. The jacket has the very faintest of rubbing on the top right corner of the front but is otherwise unmarked.

There is minor scuffing on the edge of the rear board of vol 1 and on the edges of both boards of vol 2; vol 2 has some superficial damage to the boards at the rear hinge. The endpapers are slightly browned. Internally, both vols are clean and bright and tightly bound with no markings or inscriptions. There are no dustjackets.

There is a small area of minor spotting on the righthand edge of the text block. Internally, the pages are clean and firmly bound. There are no inscriptions. The jacket is also in VG+ condition. There is very minor edgewear to both ends of the spine and some minor creasing towards the top of the spine. There is a Book Society wrap-around paper banner, and the whole is nicely protected in a plastic wrapper.
