Description:
London: Reeve and Co , 1852 A good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with hand coloured frontispiece and 15 further hand coloured plates. This was part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series and is one of the scarcer titles. The series was intended for older children as an introduction to different fields of natural history. They vary greatly from the very technical Popular History of Lichens to the chatty and anecdotal of which this volume is a good example. The binding has blind stamped decoration to both boards and gilt to the front board and spine. It is rubbed - particularly around the spine which is sunned with more faded gilt. The spine is lightly cocked to the front and the ends are pulled. Corners lightly turned. The original endpapers are present with 'From the Author' written at the top of the front free endpaper. Contents are complete with an 8 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. There is a small repaired tear to the top edge of the title page and a small piece of paper… Read More

Description:
London : Reeve and Co, 1852 A good copy of the 2nd edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 16 hand coloured plates. This was part of the Popular History series published originally in the late 1840's - mid 1850's. The series was designed to give young people a good introduction to the study of nature and a range of authors were employed to write on their particular subjects. Maria Catlow's work came in for some criticism but it is a nice example of its period and tries to take its readers with it by showing what they might expect to find month by month. The colour plates are well done. The decorative cloth binding has a gilt butterfly design on the front board and series designs and titles to the spine. The binding is sunned at the edges and on the spine and there are a couple of small tears to the spine joints. Corners have light wear with some bumping to the back corners. Contents are complete with a publisher's catalogue bound in at the front endpaper. Pen inscription to front… Read More

Description:
Bungay: C Brightley and T Kinnersley, 1804 First edition in 2 volumes comprehensively illustrated with high quality plates and maps. The Reverend Blomfield drew on a variety of sources, eg Oliver Goldsmith, Bruce to produce a work which covers a wide range of topics including 'animated nature', astronomy, geology and 'mathematical geography' as well as a tour of the world as it was known then. Blomfield clearly wanted to produce a work that was so comprehensive that it was the only work that anyone would need to read on those subjects. The plate listing only refers to around half the plates and maps. Both volumes retain the original marbled boards which are rubbed, and have new pigskin leather spines and corners and new endpapers. The spines do not have labels. Volume I, 827 pp, contains frontispiece, vignette title page, preface, text covering geology, nature, europe, and much else, and 9 full page engravings, 10 full page maps, 1 folding map and 1 folding chart. Volume II, dated… Read More

Description:
London: Adam Islip, 1627 A fair copy of the extremely scarce '2nd impression' of Edward Grimeston's Generall Historie of the Netherlands. Grimeston was known as prolific translator, and the first edition of the Historie was largely taken from J F Le Petit's 'La Grand Chronique Ancienne et Moderne de Hollande'. It was a fairly faithful translation, but he researched the subject, adding text on the years 1601-1608, using sources such as Emanuel Demetrius. It was very popular but he was criticised for not including more on the efforts and achievements of the English troops in Flanders. In his address at the beginning of the 2nd, 1627, edition, he states that he did in 1608 'observe my Authors......They were men borne in those countries, who would arrogate as much as might be, to their own Nation'. In the new edition, he 'had conference with some of the great Commanders and Captaines' from the English side, and endeavoured to redress the balance. He wanted to also bring the edition up to date, but… Read More

Description:
London: Whittaker and Co, 1834 A good copy of the 10th volume in the Griffith edition of 'The Animal Kingdom arranged in conformity with its Organization by the Baron Cuvier', which is complete in itself. The Griffith edition has particularly fine detailed plates which are black and white in most copies, and occasionally in colour. This copy has 64 black and white plates. The page format is unusually large - 25.9cm x 20 cm. It has been rebound at some point in maroon buckram cloth with gilt titles and the name Foyle to the spine. There is some darker marking to the spine; some rubbing to edges and joints and the corner wear. The rebinding has unfortunately attached the series title page to the front endpaper at the gutter and has done the same with the rear endpaper and the final leaf. The stitching is visible two leaves in at the front and one leaf back at the rear. However, the binding is sound and clean. Coloniae: Heronem Alopeciu, 1522 An extremely scarce early edition published in September 1522 - a month after the authorised Basel edition - by Hero Alopecius in Cologne.
