Small 8vo, original mustard cloth, illustrated with eight wood engraved plates, 209 [1] pp. Just a little rubbing to spine ends, corners a little crimped; otherwise near fine. There are two dated editions of this work, 1873 and 1874, with the same pagination and publisher. According to Graff, there is an undated version of some 219 pages, which he believes is an earlier edition. Graff also believes this was largely a work of fiction designed to advertise Dr. Clark Johnson's Indian blood syrup. Eastman probably borrowed from Catlin, but the work was popular in its time.

Relatively scarce item (OCLC locates two copies) on political corruption in New York City. Eaton (1823-1899) was born in Vermont and became a lawyer and noted civil service reformer. He appears to have given up his legal practice to became a full time civil service reformer, and actually toured Europe in the 1870s to study the subject. Eaton had strong views on how corrupt New York City politics had become, he went as far as to say that "New York City Parties Debase Themselves," but he also provides ideas on how to make city government simpler and gives suggestions on how to fix it. 8vo, rebound with leather spine and marbaled boards, illustrated with large folding map, 184 pp. Some creases and stains to pages, but generally bright and clean, rubber stamp with date on lower margin of title page, map has some chips and tears at folds, some discloration from tape repairs to one fold and where it is connected to book; else good. Wagner considered this work one of the most interesting accounts of this important western expedition. There is a good deal of material on Texas, New Mexico, Indians and the Santa Fe region.There is also some information on the Texas Rangers, including a discussion on the brutality of the Rangers in chaper seven. Copper engraved plate, colored, 9" x 11 1/2". Matted, hinged at the top, some even toning and aging; otherwise in very good condition, with a clean and bright impression. George Edwards (1694-1773) was born in Essex, and was apprenticed as a child to a merchant in London. He preferred a more artistic career, and eventually set up his own studio. The naturalist and artist Mark Catesby taught him how to etch, and this led to publishing four volumes of his hand colored engravings with related text under the title A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. The first volume came out in 1743, and the final volume was published in 1751. This plate shows a small black monkey holding some fruit. According to the notation on the illustration the image was supposed to represent actual size. ODB.

Spine label very faded with a couple of chip[s, cover with some wear spots, especially along edges, tape hinge repairs along inside boards and endpapers, cigar rubber stamp on top margin of all plates, does not interfere with image, normal aging, contents clean, overall about very good. A great book for boxing fans has pictures of some great boxers in American history including John L. Sullivan, James J. Corbett, Peter Jackson, Paddy Ryan, Bob Fitzsimmons, and Tom Hyer. The definitive study of the fur seal and related mammals in Alaska. Includes a sepia-tone gelatin silver-print photograph (5x7) of the seacoast settlement on St. George Island, Alaska, laid in. Chapters on the discovery and description of the Pribylov Islan; natives of the islands; seal life on Pribylov Islands; sea lion, walrus, etc.

Ellis (1814-1894) was a historian as well as a clergyman. He wrote on different aspects of the history of Massachusetts, and relations between Indians and whites. A somewhat scarce title, as the OCLC locates only eight copies. OCLC.

Emmons was a 24 year-old unmarried music teacher. Her cousin, Charles Leonard, a Yale student studying to be a Doctor, "belongs to the 45th Regiment, now in camp near Boston. He had a furlough a short time since and called last Sabbath to bid me a last good bye. He looked quite well in his soldier suit and I can but respect him for leaving his studies and volunteering his services at such a time as this." She writes in a PS at the top of the letter, "our neighbor Mr. Chase has just Enlisted and starts tomorrow for Worcester. He is an abolitionist – and since the 'Emancipation Act' has felt it his duty to act his part". Some edge wear, joints beginning to split, some soiling to cloth, foxing throughout, diagonal tear to Map of the Territory of New Mexico; otherwise very good. This work is considered a great study of lands recently taken from the Mexican government, by a topographical engineer and scientist. Small 8vo, full leather, illustrated 312 pp. Binding worn in places, top hinge cracked, bottom starting, one folding plate repaired, internally quite clean. Contains 81 illustrations, including six folding plates. The text is satire that pokes fun at everyone from Kings to common folk. It is considered one of the great works of satire. The plates are after designs by Hans Hoblien (1497-1543).

Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, disbound, printed double column, 14 pp. Removed, dbd, some aging and browning; otherwise about very good. Edward Everett (1794-1865) was a Governor and U.S. Senator. In this speech he opposes what would become the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which would overturn the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and allow each new state to decide if would be a free or slave state. Many feel this act would end up moving us toward the Civil War.

Pamphlet, 8vo, removed,  printed double column, 13 pp. Removed, some aging and browning, a little darkening in right margin; otherwise about very good.  Edward Everett (1794-1865) was a senator when he made this speech. The Central American Treaty was with Mexico, and addressed some outstanding issues that lingered after the Mexican American War. The treaty would result in payment of about $10 million to Mexico for lands that would become part of Arizona and New Mexico.
