RUSSIA TO ITALY. Fair. 1876. On offer is a fascinating, original 1876 manuscript bound memoir relating a journey from Russia to Italy handwritten by J.D. Barnes. The front cover title plate states: St. Petersburg J.D. Barnes Souvenir of Journey to Italy Dec. 1875 - Jan 1876. The journey departs from St. Petersburg Russia, travels through Poland and onwards to Italy. In total the 9" x 14" folio sized book has 15 pages, 13 of narrative and then two pages in another hand, likely in Russian. Description:
Walton, New York: Walton NY, Agloe NY, Rural New York. Good. 1943-1948. Hardcover. On offer are a set of six diaries written during and immediately following WWII in rural America. They paint a wonderful view of life in a small rural community. The author of these diaries is Lena Carey. Carey was born May 14, 1880 in Walton NY. She was married to John Carey. Together, they had 2 daughters. She passed away in 1970 at the age of 89. A housewife, she was a leader in 4-H work for 10 years; active in the Home Bureau and for many years a member of Walton Grange and Delaware County Pomona Grange. She lived on a farm very close to Walton. Interestingly, Walton is close to Agloe, the fictional town created as a "copyright trap" in the 1930's, to prevent copyright infringement of a mapping company. Written in the years of and immediately following WWII, her diaries offer an excellent long-term record of life in this part of rural New York. She began this group of diaries when she was… Read More

Description:
Iowa. Fair with no dust jacket. 1854. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating composition book dating to the mid-19th century in pioneer America. This composition book was written by T. D. Nowlin. Nowlin was born in 1838, likely in Iowa as his family was closely involved in the creation of the State of Iowa. He was 16 years of age when he wrote this. Sadly, he passed away in January of 1855 at the age of 17. Our informal research has not found any additional biographical information. The book contains 15 compositions which cover a variety of topics - some likely suggested by his teacher and other probably chosen from his own interests. These include Tobacco, Ode to a Gray Mare, The Rifle and one entitled What Is Education. An excerpt from What is Education follows: “...That is a question that is easily asked but not so easily answered. But I imagine that I hear some one say that education is a knowledge of books well here I agree with him. But I ask is this all that forms an… Read More

ASEA ABOARD THE ELLEN STUART. Good+. 1862. On offer is a super, very intriguing, original 1862 - 1863 journal handwritten on board the noted clipper ship 'Ellen Stuart' part of the fleet owned and operated by storied merchant Peter Stuart. The ship was a formidable presence on the oceans between England, Africa and Southeast Asia during the 1850s. The log written by a mariner, likely a first or second officer, perhaps James Dalton, precisely describing the set of sails and changes to the set, weather, position, working or setting 'the people' to task or 'the people employed holystoning the deck, flying fish coming aboard to 'the monkey jumping for pumpkin' making for a technical mariner's dream of a log with a real HM Navy feel in a real life merchant clipper that would please any Forester or Patrick O'Brien fan. While the year is not clearly identified we believe this Liverpool to Calcutta India voyage is dated from Tuesday August 5th 1862 to Saturday… Read More

CINCINNATI [CINCINATTA] OHIO MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. Good. 1850. On offer is a superb piece of original correspondence from the mid-1800s in America. This 3-page letter measures 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches and is in excellent condition. The handwriting is very neat and quite legible. The author of the letter is Issac Davey, a businessman from Cincinnati, OH. The letter is written in May, 1850 to his daughter, Elizabeth. Davey was born in the early 1800s. Records indicate that he owned a clothing store in Cincinnati. He passed away in 1864. The letter to his daughter reflects his concern for her well-being and relief at knowing she escaped a major tragedy of the time. The Belle of the West was a steam-powered riverboat that plied the inland waterways of the Mississippi Valley. On Apr 22nd, 1850, her boilers exploded during the night and the ship caught fire. Despite being run aground, dozens of passengers lost their lives. The Cincinnati Chronicle reported the story: on Apr 23rd, 1850: The public… Read More

VIETNAM. Very Good. 1966. On offer is a very interesting, original manuscript relic dated September 6, 1966 through October 1, 1967 of the Vietnam War and American involvement handwritten and typed by US Special Forces Chaplain, David G. Boyce [b.1928 - d. March 4th 2013]. One part "Duty Log" and moreso a diary of all his movements and his personal thoughts regarding his service this is a very intimate personal history. (There are even some movie plots he has imagined and poetry and songs - Boyce was quite a Renaissance man it appears!) Using yellow legal pad paper, originally handwritten, the author changes over to a typed manuscript of 350+ pages doing a superb job of recording names, ranks, operational duties and much, much more. [He does at times use blank spaces to be discreet and sometimes he admits he has forgotten the name.] Here is a sample passage - spelling and typing mistakes intact: I remember the invitation of the Mike Force CO who is up here with a company… Read More
