Bound in maroon publisher’s cloth. Spine is lightly faded; some minor spots of rubbing and bumping. A name with a date (1895) is printed on the front free fly leaf. Interior pages are clean. Mollie Fancher (d.1916) was a Brooklyn woman who suffered two accidents at the age of 17 and as a result became bind and partially paralyzed. Afterwards she displayed signs of supposed clairvoyance and split personality. She was also able to exist for long periods with little or no food. Witnesses testified to her being able to read books and letters clairvoyantly as well as identify lost objects. Over time Fancher became "possessed" or plagued by several different personalities with names such as Sunbeam, Idol and Rosebud (Shepard, Encyc. of Occultism I, p.323-24). Massachusetts author Richard Henry Dana's influential work "Two years before the mast" is an account of his own experiences serving on a sailing ship. The work was first published in 1840.

A note is handwritten on the verso of the frontispiece (dated Sept. 1916). The title page shows some age-toning. Minor spots of foxing are present on the prelims and on the outer edge of the title. Original end papers are preserved but worn at the edges. Two names are written in a contemporary hand at the top of the title page (1 name is crossed out). Dibdin discusses the best books with which to fill an English gentleman’s antiquarian library. Primarily covers works in the humanities - history, voyages and travels, belles letters, poetry, English drama etc. Copious notes are included on many titles in regards to content, scarcity, best editions etc.

The entire book, including the text, was printed from engraved copper plates – 60 plates (an illustrated title page plate, 29 anatomical plates and 30 calligraphic letterpress plates). Bound in a contemporary or near contemporary binding with calf spine and decorative paste paper boards - rubbed, edges shelf worn, old ink stain on rear cover. Both the upper portion of the spine and the tail cap are carefully restored. Board corners are neatly repaired. Interior contains an occasional minor spots of marginal foxing; a couple of tiny holes or paper defects are present on the text plate opposite plate 20. The leaves are otherwise generally clean. Bound in original cloth with a decorative gilt spine and a scene in gilt on the front cover depicting villagers making palm oil (the same illustration as on p. 64). Binding shows rubbing and wear to the extremities; spine is faded; head and tail caps are worn and frayed. Interior contains some scattered foxing and spotting. Small 5 mm tear to margin of one plate. Georges Duplessis (1834-1899) a prolific French author on engraving and book illustration. He was a conservateur at the Bibliotheque nationale department des Estampes. His "Les merveilles de la gravure" was published in French (1871). The book appeared in English the same year. Includes chapters on the Italian, Flemish, German, and French schools as well as sections on Engraving in England and Spain.
