Description:
[Texas] [Civil War] S. H. Darcy. Autograph letter, signed. La Grange, Texas. June 4, 1863. To Mrs. Jones. One page. 8 x 10.5 in. Black ink on blue paper. Approximately 250 words.
La Grange, Texas, the county seat of Fayette County, was untouched by fighting during the Civil War. This letter gives an interesting view of the home front in 1863. A long discussion on getting a quantity of sugar, which would have been scarce and which "cost me by the hogshead 1 dollar a pound" but will let her have a pound for "less than 1 dollar and 25 cents." Mentions someone who traveled to Arkansas and saw her sister, indicating that the war had not yet disrupted travel of that sort. In addition, a number of Confederate militia companies were organized at La Grange. The letter writer indicates that a friend had a letter from "Wink" who says "they are ordered to the Rio grande." Civil war material of this type from La Grange is uncommon.

Description:
[Mexican-American War] Francisco M. de Olaguíbel. El gobernador del estado libre y sobrano de mexico, a sus habitantes. Toluca, Mexico: [No publication information] Abril 21, 1847. Broadside printed on laid paper 31 cm. Signed in type: Francisco M. de Olaguíbel
OCLC shows no holdings for this apparently unrecorded decree, issued three days after the battle of Cerro Gordo, which saw Winfield Scott's United States troops outflank Antonio López de Santa Anna's larger Mexican army, driving it from a strong defensive position. Here the Governor of Toluca attempts to rally the people to continue the war, invoking their ancestors and calling for guerrilla tactics, among other things:
Fellow citizens: The time for combat has come. Cerro-Gordo has been occupied by the enemy, and there is no longer a so-called army. We have lost weapons of all kinds and artillery, and that inconceivable term of that action: that term, as shameful as it is so terrible, leaves the peoples alone to take care of the war. Description:
[Dueling] Dodge, John W. Handwritten Dialogue on Duelling. (sic) [No publication information] 1832. Green wraps. 9 pp. In Latin. Covers detached. Edge chips, stains.
A dialogue between two characters, Edward and Henry. Perhaps a school exercise. "As dialogue is a copy of that easy intercourse, and free communication, which men have with each other, it is a species of composition very generally pleasing. Accordingly, we find it in early estimation. Some parts of the Old Testament are written in this form; and the Greek, and Roman philosophy was often conveyed to the world through its intervention. Plato, and Tully were the great masters in philosophy of this mode of writing …. In the first place, a proper subject should be selected. Every subject is not proper for a dialogue. A subject either simply narrative, or simply didactic, is improper, because it throws all the conversation into one hand. It should be a subject which has two sides; and will therefore bear a debate." – William Gilpin, On… Read More

We are proud of ours who fought in their ranks. Honor to them and to the Luxembourgers, who on the soil of the country have loyally and courageously resisted the most cruel of oppressors.
