This important book is a good copy that has been professionally rebacked with most of the original spine. Corners worn and exposed, but holding. The boards are sound with some soiling and some white specks/spots on the back. New endpapers front and back similar in color tone to the originals. The title page at the upper gutter has a 1 1/2" repaired split. Very, very scarce now in this edition. Howes D6, 6-guns 538, cf 150 #43 & Rader 1020.

Finely printed, decorated bookseller's label of the Plantation Book Shop, Natchez, Miss., on the front paste down. Some of the original letters of the famous French officer & "his son & other members of the family" were found "in an Oklahoma farm house", the property of a relative of Capt. Francis Allyn, "commander of the ship Cadmus in which Lafayette & his son came to the United Stated in 1824", at which time the Congress & Pres. Monroe placed great honors on him. Front hinge broken after frontispiece. Title-page foxed. Paper of rear paste down has wrinkles. Good. Very scarce. Rader 1031.

Twenty sections, from the Spanish & French in the Mississippi Valley, to the Five Civilized Tribes, to the Civil War in Indian Territory, to ranching, the land openings, statehood, economic & educational development, etc.. Dale was one of the famous profs of history at OU, & Rader was librarian at OU. Some rubbing to top of spine, else fine. No dj, possibly as issued. Very scarce now.
