Description:
Baltimore Museum of Art/Pennsylvania State University Press, 2002. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 297 pages. 119 color illustrations and 10 b&w. With an essay by Thomas Primeau. Catalogue entries by Deborah Carton, Susan Dackerman, Richard S. Field, Katherine Crawford Luber, Elizabeth Mansfield, Walter S. Melion, Thomas Primeau and Robert Wheaton. An old master print with color is almost invariably regarded as a suspect object because the color is presumed to be a cosmetic addition made to compensate for deficiencies of design or condition. Painted Prints challenges this deeply entrenched assumption about the material and aesthetic structure of old master prints by showing that in many cases hand coloring is not a dubious supplement to a print but is instead an integral element augmenting its expressive power, beauty, and meaning. Clean, bright copy. NOTE: Due to size and weight, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY. Record # 384487

Description:
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2016. 1st. Hardcover. Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrinkwrap. This stunning book charts the rich history of the blues, through the dazzling array of posters, album covers, and advertisements that have shaped its identity over the past hundred years. The blues have been one of the most ubiquitous but diverse elements of American popular music at large, and the visual art associated with this unique sound has been just as varied and dynamic. There is no better guide to this fascinating graphical world than Bill Dahl—a longtime music journalist and historian who has written liner notes for countless reissues of classic blues, soul, R&B, and rock albums. With his deep knowledge and incisive commentary—complementing more than three hundred and fifty lavishly reproduced images—the history of the blues comes musically and visually to life. Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press, 2005. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover, 208 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This lavishly illustrated book establishes the towering influence of the scientist Victor Regnault (1810-1878) in the earliest decades of photography, a period of experimentation ripe with artistic, commercial, and scientific possibility. Regnault has a double significance to the early history of photography, as the first leader of the Société Française de Photographie (S.F.P.) and as the maker of more than two hundred calotype (paper negative) portraits and landscapes. His photographic and scientific careers intersected a third field with his appointment in 1852 as director of the Sèvres porcelain works. Readers are treated to Regnault's own beguiling pastoral, garden, and forest scenes; striking portraits of the scientists and artists in his circle of friends; quirky images of acoustic experiments; and an insider's view of the Sèvres porcelain works. NY: Phaidon Press, 2005. 1st. Softcover. Very Good/None. Softcover, 128 pages, 55 photos. Born in 1941, Larry Fink was a teenager in the 1950s in an America on the cusp of radical social change. Growing up on Long Island in New York, Larry Fink was disinterested in the consumer-driven culture of 1950s' America. A disaffected teenager, his parents transferred him to art school where his career as a photographer began to flourish. His parents were supportive of his interest in the arts, and Fink would later drop out of college to join a circle of artists living in Greenwich Village. Fink spent the 1960s watching and learning from the prominent photographers of the time: Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith, and in many ways, his photographic aesthetic and rebellious spirit encapsulate the dramatic lose of innocence that the US underwent after the assassination of John F.
