Light foxing; very good. bjcb 352254 An overview of the history and working mechanisms of the United States Military Academy, i.e., West Point, published in the midst of the Civil War. Mansfield's text originally appeared in the American Journal of Education and the present item is a separately-issued and stand-alone reprint. The author, Edward Deering Mansfield, was graduated from West Point in 1818 and went on to write a number of biographies on military figures such as Winfield Scott and Ulysses S. Grant.

Crossman writing to his wife and discussing this man's interest in phrenology, American theater, and hearing lectures by Massachusetts reformers by Theodore Parker and Thomas Wentworth Higginson.

Substantial collection of The Lowell Courier, edited by Daniel S. Richardson (1816-1890) and printed and published by Daniel H. Knowlton and Leonard Huntress (1811-1885) who established the newspaper in 1835. The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Digital Library inform: "The Lowell Daily Journal and Courier had its origins in the failure of the original Lowell Journal in 1834. Partners Leonard Huntress and Daniel H. Knowlton purchased the defunct paper, and united it with the Lowell Courier, which was first published on January 6, 1835. Started as a rival newspaper to the Democratic Journal, the Lowell Courier was Whig in orientation and politics. It appeared tri-weekly only until July 1, 1845, when William Schouler, who purchased the Courier and Journal in 1842, began to print the paper daily. Includes over 230 recipes for treating various ailments and skin conditions and the preparation of barber's toiletries. Medical treatments are offered for such diseases as chicken pox, smallpox, syphilis, German measles, scarlet fever, and cancer. Plus a section entitled "Notes on Bacteria," by Dr. Adolph Gehrmann, Bacteriologist for the Department of Health of Chicago. Not in OCLC. Exceedingly rare nineteenth-century commemorative album of 187 lithographic views showing religious houses and schools in Europe of the School Sisters de Notre Dame, a Roman Catholic religious order of women founded to teach the poor. The album was issued on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the religious profession of the order's Superior General, Maria Margarita of Cortona Widemann. Mother Widemann was born in 1814 in Günzburg, Bavaria where most of the orders' activity was centered.¹ She professed her first religious vows in 1839, just six years after the founding of the order. Early Republic sermon concerning Joseph Mountain, an escaped enslaved African American executed for the capital crime of raping a young white girl. An estimated crowd of ten thousand witnessed Joseph Mountain's death.  At his trial, Mountain plead not guilty. Dana's The Intent of Capital Punishment -published two weeks after his hanging- vigorously refuted Mountain's declaration of innocence. According to its author and New Haven pastor James Dana (1735-1812), his sermon was preached to "one doomed to death by public justice, and but a few hours before his launching into eternity." Danzenbaker, formerly of Washington, D.C., held at least four patents for his hive. The text thoroughly describes Danzenbaker's hive for comb honey (first introduced in 1895), prints lavish testimonials, and gives general beekeeping advice. Amply illustrated and printed in small dense text. OCLC, in America, one copy of a Washington, D.C. edition, but not this one.

Albany pamphlet issued as a newspaper "Extra" of the Albany Atlas, publishing the anti-slavery proceedings of the 1847 Democratic State Convention at Herkimer, New York. The convention resolved to adopt the provisions of the Congressional proposal known as the Wilmot Proviso which opposed allowing slavery in territories recently acquired from Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Congressman David Wilmot himself attended the convention. His remarks are summarized here and, to give a fairer account of his sentiments, the pamphlet reprints a speech he gave in Albany following the convention. [Chicago, 1941.] A.L.S. 1½ pages. Near Fine. Intriguing letter by Dawes to George H. Pepper describing the planning of the Allied Armies in France during the First World War. Dawes continues on this theme and concludes: "The story of Cowens and myself being reconciled at lunch is pure invention, as is also the anecdote about my impatience at some proposed adjournment of an imaginary meeting." This may possibly reference Dawes appearance before the Senate's hearing on war expenditures, post-war in 1921, in which Dawes burst out: "Hell and Maria, we weren't trying to keep a set of books over there, we were trying to win a war!" Biography of celebrated French Renaissance soldier, Pierre Terrail (1476-1524), more generally known as the Chevalier (Knight) de Bayard or simply, le bon chevalier-the good knight. Biographer Guyard de Berville here presents a portrait of nobility, exemplified in the long and courageous military career of the Chevalier de Bayard, who served three successive French kings.
