The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board. The pages are yellowed and tanned but clear of any markings. "The original plan was to include Psalms 51-150 in the second volume (cf. Psalms I [The Anchor Bible, vol.16; New York, 1966], pp. XVIII, XLIII) but this has not proved feasible. The amount of relevant Northwest Semitic material available for use and citation exceeds earlier expectations; in fact, I had thought it would be possible to translate the remaining psalms with relative dispatch, frequently referring the reader to Psalms I for pertinent discussion and documentation of the principles on which the translations would be based...." - Introduction from Psalms 51-100: Introduction, Translation, And Notes

"A preface may serve various purposes. The author of the book that likely arrives for review attempts to disarm the would-be critic and his preface. He honestly sets forth the difficulties encountered in the composition of his work and candidly exposes the defects that mar the finished product. But he apparently overdoes it because one is inclined to ask, or glancing through the preface, the not impertinent question, "Then why was the book ever written?" - Preface from The Anchor Bible's Psalms I 1-50: Introduction, Translation, and Notes

Since that time the archives have been explored, and the old story which satisfied Hallam will never be told again. Mr. Brewer has done more than any other man to dispel the dark tradition, and to pour light upon an epoch which will always interest every description of educated men." - Historical Essays And Studies

"In the most secluded part of the Imperial Palace of Byzantium, far beyond the guardrooms and the apartments of state, in the midst of shadowy gardens and running waters, which, to quote a contemporary chronicler, made of it "a new Eden," "another Paradise," arose the private dwelling of the Greek Emperors of the Middle Ages...." - Chapter I from The Life Of A Byzantine Empress

"The words Gnois (yvwois == Knowledge) and Gnosticism relate to certain sects which, during the first centuries in which Christianity was developing, competed with it upon its own grounds. The most famous episode of this rivalry is the one about Simon Magus recorded in Acts VIII--not, in itself, a very informative event, although its place in apostolic history has assured it of greater fame than many others of later date that are better known...." - Chapter One from The Secret Books Of The Egyptian Gnostics

"It was unfair of Conan Doyle to say (as he did in his delightful autobiography, Memories and Adventures) that Dr. Watson had never shown a gleam of humor nor made a single joke. Let me refute that at once. In the first chapter of The Valley of Fear the good doctor, after some rather sharp taunting by his friend, caught Holmes fairly off guard. They were speaking of Professor Moriarty...." - In Memoriam Sherlock Holmes from The Complete Sherlock Holmes: Volume I and Volume II
