Shows Dante and Virgil with the monster Geryon representing Fraud. Some very light foxing to outer margins no affect. Inner margin with repair no affect. Great example of original Dante incunable. 12.5 x 8.5 inches. This work is unidentified though very similar to the Venice: Bernardinus & Matteo Capcasa [Bernadino Benali & Matthio de Parma] edition of 1491. See Library of Congress and Houghton Library, Harvard University. The leaf numbers and text do not match but in same vein. The woodcuts are indeed the same and according to Houghton Library are illustrated by the Pico Master. It would be fair to say this is likely another edition of the same. Large engraving depicts the macabre torment of the devil in various guises to the Tupi people of Brazil. In the background a group of Europeans are attempting to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. A dark impression with a few very small worm holes to outer corner and one very small one at left corner of engraving no affect. Printers crease at top and a crease where the book margin folds no afffect. Would be most suitable for framing. A scarce engraving.
