Description:
Oliver Twist, or The Parish Boy's Progress, is the second novel by Charles Dickens, and was first published as aserial 1837–39. The story is of the orphan Oliver Twist, who starts his life in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin.
Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.[1] The alternate title, The Parish Boy's Progress, alludes to Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, as well as the 18th-century caricature series by William Hogarth,A Rake's Progress and A Harlot's Progress.
In this early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time, including child labour, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children.… Read More

Description:
A pictorial record of George Washington's career Mr. Sawyer's massive volumes are to be commended- to those who love the minute details of biography. Nothing that could be illustrated seems to have escaped Mr. Sawyer's attention. He even includes among his fifteen hundred illustrations, large and small, reduced photographs of letters, documents and newspaper articles relating in some way to the great man. We should have preferred a more rigorous selection, but that is a matter of taste. Mr. Sawyer's memoir is frankly uncritical. He does not fail to discuss the legend of the cherry-tree, invented by the egregious Mr. Weems, and gives a photograph of " an alleged descendant " of the tree which George cut down with his little hatchet. Here, again, we could have wished for a more dispassionate estimate of Washington as general and statesman, but the author was concerned only to paint an ideal American and has done so very successfully. In his conventional account of the revolution Mr. Sawyer should not… Read More

Description:
Lloyd Cassel Douglas was born on August 27, 1877, in Columbia City, Indiana. Alexander Jackson Douglas and Sara Jane Cassel Douglas were Lloyd C. Douglas's parents. At the time of Douglas' birth, his father was a farmer, school teacher, lawyer, state senator, and rural minister. Douglas spent his early years traveling between communities in Ohio and Indiana where his father served as a Lutheran minister. His youth was spent primarily with his father, who was performing different pastoral tasks. This provided valuable preparation for a career as a minister.
Douglas's final pastorate was at Montreal's St. James United Church, where he served from the spring of 1929 to May of 1933. Douglas resigned from the Montreal Church in order to devote himself entirely to literature.
His first work was published in 1920, his first outstanding novel appeared in 1929, and in 1933 a full-time writing career was begun. Carl Bode, writing in the American Quarterly, states that Douglas' books can be divided into three… Read More
