Sir Kenelm Digby (1603-1665) English courtier and diplomat, polymath, natural philosopher, astrologer, alchemist and leading intellectual described as "The Ornament of this Nation". Not only a founding member of The Royal Society and a promoter of sympathetic magic, he is credited with the invention of the modern wine bottle. He was awarded the Patent of Sealing Wax in Wales and the Welsh Borders. Digby's cookbook included a recipe for capons fed on the flesh of vipers. In 1627 Digby became a privateer, sailing his flagship The Eagle into the Mediterranean to attack, seize and plunder French and Spanish ships that came his way. This journal is the day to day log of the voyage.

The new introduction comprehensively addresses the material changes in Nyasaland since the original publication of this book in 1903, and clarifies some areas which "were somewhat misunderstood".
