Marbled page edges and endpapers. Solid tight binding despite partial split at title page and a one inch tear in back board along the gutter from the head of spine. Embossed leather hardcover boards lightly rubbed on the face, moderately rubbed on spine, rubbed through on corners and spine edges. Except for corners and head of spine, the gilt lettering and borders are intact. Gift inscription in pencil on FFEP. Contains frontispiece and one other gravure (with rice paper covers) by Girardet and Boilly.

For those of us who lived through the "abertura" in the early 1980s we know how this unassuming series had an immense impact on society at the time. The publisher (for graphics) and author (for content) would make revisions between printings. This would include variations in size: measuring from 11,1 x 15,2 to 11,7 x 15,8 cm. Pocket book in the strictest sense since at less than one cm thick (from 80 to 120 pages) and designed to fit in the back pocket of a pair of jeans. This also explains the pattern of scuff marks on the covers. Tight clean text in scuffed wraps.

Flammarion, 1976. Hardcover. Good/No DJ as Issued. This is the 1976 printing of the 1948 edition, the original edition goes back to the 1920s. As such, it is a historical document of cocktails, after all, what contemporary cocktail book has a chapter on "grogs" or a page on "mate" (when did the tea of the pampas get mixed up with cocktails?), or a line on "caxaca" which asserts it is drunk only by Brazilian blacks and mulatos? An authoritative guide to the classics of cocktails before the era of modern bartending. One scratch on back and bubbling of the plastic coating along the spine edge, in general, book is still in good or better condition. 600 recipes, 234 pages, 11 x 16 cm. hardcover.
