As new.||A far deeper coverage of the less known output of the Daniel family at their domestic press at their home in Frome, Somerset. The domestic press dates from Henry’s early years but it was picked up by two of his brothers, Eustace and William, while he was away at school and then studying in London and Oxford. After Henry had left home and established himself and his press at Worcester College, Oxford, the brothers and their clergyman father continued printing small items. Thin 8vo., original rose calf binding by René Desmules dated 1972 with delicate dots and wave patterns with a catherine wheel-like device in the centre of each side all in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, white calf turnins and maroon suede doublures, all edges gilt, original wrappers bound in, housed in the original matching chemise and slipcase. First trade edition (a limited subscriber’s edition had appeared in 1926). 54 plates, 4 folding maps. 4to., rull russet deep-grained morocco by Denise Lubett, signed on the lower turn in with monogram and dated 1954, with cream morocco onlays across both covers forming the Arabic word ‘Aurans’, olive green morocco doublures tooled in gilt with other Arabic versions of T.E. Lawrence’s name, all edges gilt, housed in the original russet morocco backed with light brown cloth chemise and slipcase. Very good. A couple of small marks on the upper side consistent with variations in the leather.||Lubett’s sumptuous binding of TE Lawrence’s epic masterpiece was exhibited at ‘The art of the book William Morris and after 1892-1977’ in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1978, no. 163. The collection includes 28 proof wood engravings most of which are inscribed and signed by the artist with editions varying between 20 and 110 copies and several of which are of printing presses. There are also a number of Christmas cards incorporating DePol illustrations including lithographs and wood engravings dating from the 1940s to the 1990s one with a tls describing the illustrations on that particular card.
