Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1881. First edition. Octavo. 238 pp. Publisher's terra-cotta cloth, black and gilt lettering and decoration to spine and front cover, chocolate brown endpapers. Minor extremity wear. A very good copy of a rather elusive title. The author a noted anti-suffragette, author and translator, was the second wife of Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren. She was the daughter of Congressman Samuel Finley Vinton, and the widow of Daniel Convers Goddard, first Assistant Secretary of the newly created U.S. Department of the Interior. Dahlgren took command of the South Pacific Squadron from Rear Admiral George F. Pearson, in 1867. He was stationed in Lima and Valparaiso. When he was relieved of the command of the Squadron in 1869, he returned to the Washington Navy Yard where he served until his death in 1870. These sketches are Madeleine Dahlgren's remembrances of those two years spent in South America. For an uptight society woman, living in South America in the 1860s was… Read More

St. Paul: Ingersoll, Photo, [ca. 1888]. Five original albumen photographs, each about 4 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches on original matching plain mounts, 8 x 10 inches, captioned in negative, 3 with inked stamps on verso of "Ingersoll, Photo., St. Paul, Minn." One with a short marginal tear and another with minimal foxing. A fine view into the workaday world of the 1880s. The Little Missouri Horse Company was established by Arthur Clark Huidekoper in the Dakota Territory in 1884, around the same time and place that Theodore Roosevelt began his own ranching adventures. The Little Missouri soon became one of the largest horse breeding operations in American history, known for its elegant and hard-working Percherons. Various addresses are given for the company in southwestern North Dakota, including Medora, Amidon, Gladstone, and Black Butte; it was a big property. As the decades rolled in Huidekoper grew more and more irritasted at having his horses end where they shouldn't so he bought a lifetime supply of… Read More

Very small piece of upper left corner chipped else and excellent image. Ruth St. Denis holds a hallowed placed in the history of modern American dance. Such was her gift that she influenced almost every phase of American dance. "From an early age Ruth Dennis displayed a marked interest in the theatre and especially in dance. She began dancing and acting in vaudeville and musical comedy shows when she was a teenager, and she appeared in David Belasco’s productions of Zaza, The Auctioneer, and Du Barry. While touring in the last play she was reputedly inspired by a cigarette poster featuring an Egyptian scene of the goddess Isis to begin investigating Asian art and dance. Dennis took the stage name Ruth St. Denis, and in 1906, after studying Hindu art and philosophy, she offered a public performance in New York City of her first dance work, Radha (based on the… Read More
