Description:
Cain refers to author John O'Hara (1905-70) as well as to Judge John Sirica, remembered as the Watergate judge who ordered President Nixon to turn in his White House tapes over to the Senate committee. Cain writes, "In re THE CHRISTMAS SPEERT[sic], the piece I suspect of being O'Hara's first in New York: I reprinted it on the Christmas Page, December 25, of the New York World, 1929, as I pin down by the following recollection: I was in touch with the big money at the time, so I could have produced a play, and on the basis of this piece sent for O'Hara to try and persuade him to write it....I invited him down to the apartment...in October 1929, on East Nineteenth Street...my wife Elina wasn't there...." He explains why the meeting had to take place only in 1929 and continues. "O'Hara seemed surprised at my admiration for the piece, indifferent to my idea, and utterly indifferent to me. He was not the easiest person to like, being quite cold in his manner, even at age 24...I do not think I was alone in… Read More

To the curator of a museum. "For next year, Mr. Curator will kindly have his entry on the roles of doors and windows crossed out; I cannot have the trouble...twice while the work is paid nothing. He will also kindly send me...the wildflower herbarium...." Signed, "De Candolle.". De Candolle, born in Switzerland, moved to Paris in 1796. Rene Louiche Desfontaines, the French botanist and member (and later president) of the French Academy of Sciences (1783) and Academie Nationale de Medecine, launched de Candolle's botanical career [see "Scientific Papers of Asa Gray... 1889" by Gray & Sargeant, pages 292-3] by recommending him at the herbarium of Charles Louis l'Heritier de Brutelle in 1798. Within a few years de Candolle had already established a new genus and proceeded to create a new natural plant classification system. His first major publication, "Plantarum historia succulentarum" was published in sections from 1799 to 1802. It was not until 1816 that he returned to Geneva and became Chair of… Read More

Description:
Al Capp drew Three iconic Dogpatch characters he originated, in artist's pencil. Each drawing is accomplished on a 4to (8.5 x 11 inch) sheet of the cartoonist's personalized stationery, dedicated and signed with black marker. Li'l Abner is drawn twice, once in almost full length measuring 8 inches and to the right, Capp sketched his face in profile and the rest of one leg. Li'l Abner's voluptuous girlfriend and eventual wife, Daisy Mae, is drawn three-quarter length, measuring 9.5 inches, similarly dedicated and signed as is Capp's third sketch of Li'l Abner's mother, Mammy Yokum , measuring almost 9 inches in high heeled boots with second facial sketch and arm to the right. Overall condition is very good. Our trio of cartoon sketches was likely created at the same time and form an appealing representation of the long-lived Li'l Abner comic strip. The drawings are undated. Through the innocence and simplicity of Li'l Abner with his Yokum family and friends, Capp created a mechanism for social and… Read More

This is a great photograph of Capra, in his late middle age. He is seated on stage, probably at a lecture or panel discussion of some kind, because he is miked. He is wearing a light turtleneck shirt and dark jacket with handkerchief in pocket. He is smiling broadly out to the audience, his face crinkled with laughter . He has signed in full in the upper left portion on light background. Autograph

Description:
Enrico Caruso Autograph Letter Signed to his son, Rudolfo, with self portrait. Based on Caruso's reference in this letter, Fofo, as Rudolfo was known, was studying in an academy in Florence at the time. Caruso begins by criticizing his son for not writing in his, "own hand writing, whether it is good or bad. I hope I will soon receive such a letter, so I will be happier...." Caruso infers that his son likes boarding school then offers advice for success. "Be serious and make everyone love you, especially...the superiors (higher grades)...." Caruso does not know when he will see his son but offers to send stamps and hopes "to hug" him in "May or October." He ends with an expression of love, then signs, "Papa." Caruso sketches his face in profile under, "Papa." The four page letter was penned on a folded card measuring 3 1/2 x 3 inches closed, with decorative center fold perforation. The card comes in a card folder with a greeting in English on the cover. Perhaps Caruso wrote to his son from England… Read More

Caruso writes to John Ridgely Carter, an American diplomat stationed in Great Britain, noting, "Confidential" at the top of the page. "I am sorry I cannot give you a definite reply because the terms of my contract with the Royal Opera Syndicate require that all engagements of the kind you propose must pass through the Syndicate...." He signs, "Enrico Caruso." In the spring of 1906, after he lived through the San Francisco earthquake in April of that year, Caruso returned London to sing at Covent Garden. He reprised his popular roles in "Rigoletto," "Pagliacci " "Tosca," "La Traviata" and "Don Giovanni" for a total of twenty-nine performances under his contract which ended July 26. Classically framed with printed photograph by Mishkin showing Caruso standing full length in costume for "Un Ballo in Maschera." Image framed and full dimensions on request. Autograph

He writes, "Dear Madam, I was sorry not to see you in Paris before I left, but I would have been even more sorry if you had shortened your vacation in Aix to be at that last meeting on the rue Lincoln. I left all necessary instructions first to your trusted Cabioch, and then to Mrs. Joubert, and I left town without any worry on the outcome of our current projects. I hope you were somehow entertained in Aix and that you will get some rest now in your small country house. For me, I have settled down for the time being at the Mont d'Arbois, above Niegeve. I hope I am able "to hold out" for at least ten days. Then I'll spend some time at the beach to try and get "a shot in the arm," somewhere around Le Touquet, before going back to the rue de Bellechasse. Until then, please trust, dear Madam, in my very friendly sympathy." He signs, "A.M. Cassandre" Autograph

The comic actor much loved in his time has signed and illustrated this sepia toned bust length photograph showing his characteristic expression. Catlett has drawn a black cat with a large red bow below his full signature, "Walter Catlett, Hollywood Oct. 30, 1937." The sketch is a play on his name. Catlett was a comedic actor appearing in many movies as a flustered scatterbrain but best known for his roles in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Bringing Up Baby." His face is more recognizable than his name. Catlett was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Our photograph measures 7 1/4 x 7 1/2. Description:
CHURCHILL, WINSTON. Nine days after the Allied invasion of France, this   official British press photograph of Churchill was taken.    Churchill in dark clothing stands between Field Marshal Alan Brooke and General Bernard Law Montgomery at Montgomery's headquarters in France. South Africa's Prime Minister Jan Smuts stands last on the other side of Montgomery. The news service stamp on verso is Acme NewsPictures with the usual warnings of republication without crediting the news service. The photograph measures 7 x 9 inches and is in very good condition with one small break in the  top border at the center not affecting the image. The attached press caption on aged and brittle paper has deteriorated into several readable pieces. "Talked out of accompanying the first wave of invaders to the shores of France, Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited the Allied beachhead in Normandy as soon as he possibly could." Credit for the photograph goes to "British Official Photo from Acme" with the date… Read More
