Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., 1877. Hardcover. Sub-lieutenant Lord George Campbell was the youngest son of the eighth Duke of Argyll. He published 'Log-Letters from the Challenger' stating in the preface that 'These letters - extracted from my log - were written home during our cruise with no intention of publication... Such as they are I hope they will give the reader a general idea of the Challenger's cruise - a cruise which will rank as famous in the Annals of Science'. The voyage of the Challenger included visits to the Cape of Good Hope, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, Hawaii, China and Japan. This is a copy of the stated "Fifth Edition" in very good condition. The green cloth binding is stamped in black and gilt with a decorative device on the front cover. The binding is tight, clean, and square, with sharp corners. Minor wear shows at the hinges, spine ends, and corners. The contents are bright and tight. The original brown endpapers and the color folding map are both intact. A… Read More

Description:
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office (H.M.S.O.), 1940. Pamphlet. This is a wartime pamphlet of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s speech on British agriculture in the first months of the Second World War. This copy is in good plus condition. This pamphlet is a single sheet folded to create four leaves including a cover and three pages of text. The pamphlet measures 10.5 x 8 inches (26.6 x 20.3cm) and is printed in green and black. Though no publisher is specified, this is most plausibly a British Government publication, with an identifying number of "51-6494" printed at the lower right of the final page. Having been stored folded in half, there is a pronounced horizontal crease across the center. Tears have formed at the ends of the horizontal crease, one inch on the right and .5 inch on the left. This is an uncommon pamphlet with no copies found on WorldCat. On 3 September 1939 Britain declared war on Germany, formally entering what would become a defining conflict not just for Britain,… Read More

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and… Read More

Description:
Melbourne, Australia: The Henry George Foundation, January 1942. Second Edition. Paperback. Second edition, first printing. Near fine condition. This is a wartime reprint of extracts from two Churchill speeches delivered in the House of Commons on 4 May 1909 and at King's Theatre, Edinburgh, 17 July 1909. This pamphlet was first published as "The Menace of Land Monopoly" by the Henry George foundation in 1941. In 1942 the pamphlet was retitled and republished as "On Human Rights". The publisher's introductory note states: "In now publishing these extracts it is hoped that Mr. Churchill's eloquent and emphatic criticism of the present Land System will not be lost sight of in the post-war reconstruction for a New Social Order of which so much is being heard." The pamphlet measures 7.125 inches tall x 4.75 inches wide. It is sixteen pages in length with stapled cream colored card wraps. The front cover bears a decidedly resolute head and shoulders image of Churchill. This copy is crisp and bright.… Read More

London & New York: Hodder and Stoughton; George H. Doran Company, 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, humbler in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. The U.S. first edition was made from British first edition sheets bound in a plain coarse dark red cloth with the same gilt titles on the spine as used on the British. Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1933. Sandhurst abridged edition. Hardcover. This is the scarce and desirable “Sandhurst Edition” of The World Crisis – Winston Churchill’s history of the First World War. Churchill played a critical, controversial, and varied role in “The war to end all wars” a quarter of a century before he led Britain during the Second World War. His epic history of the conflict was originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931, followed in that year by a first abridged and revised edition which added new material. This 1933 “Sandhurst Edition” was a special – indeed unique – new abridgment, the completely reset text featuring chapters selected by Churchill from his 1931 abridged and revised edition. Only 1,354 copies were printed for the Royal Military College as a cadet textbook. We recently acquired a trove of a dozen copies laboriously sourced over long years by a college professor – more copies than we have encountered in the entire time we have… Read More

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing, first state, first binding state. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state of Winston Churchill's autobiography. Two states of the first edition, first printing are identified, with a list of either 11 or 12 Churchill titles in the boxed list of "Works by the same Author" on the half title verso. With 11 titles on the half title verso, this copy is definitively first state. There were also a number of first edition binding states, bound in either a coarse or a smooth plum colored cloth, with the title stamped on the front cover in either three or five lines. Precedence goes to the coarse cloth and three lines on the front cover which, together with 11 titles on the half title verso, denote first edition, first printing, first state, first binding state. Description:
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1945. Political edition," only printing. Pamphlet. This is an extraordinarily fine example of the only printing of the "Political" edition of this striking wartime speech pamphlet. Published in April, 1945, by the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, this was a campaign piece for the forthcoming General Election, containing Churchill's March 15, 1945 address to the Party Conference at Central Hall, Westminster. It attests to the fact that, as the war in Europe drew toward an inexorable close, the suspended tensions of domestic politics intruded ever more urgently on the politically unified war effort, fracturing the wartime coalition that had acknowledged Churchill as its indispensible Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1901. Second edition, second printing. Hardcover. This second and final printing of the Silver Library edition of Churchill's first book is notable for being a scarce binding variant in superior condition with interesting provenance, including both Churchill's alma mater and the British embassy in Paris. This Silver Library edition was the first to incorporate the author's corrections in the text, making this an important and highly collectable edition. Unfortunately, the maroon boards proved highly susceptible to fading and wear, the paper easily browned and became brittle, and the binding often cracked. Here is the second and final printing of the Silver Library edition. Of only 1,000 copies of this printing, just 337 were recorded as sold, so they are scarce. This particular copy is scarcer still. Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (Vol. I, A1.3.c, p.22) and Richard Langworth (p.22) note a binding variant, bound in a smooth, medium red cloth distinctly different from… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes, of which this is Part II, include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. hough the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Description:
London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a superior, unread and exceptionally clean first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. The first edition, only printing, is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms in gilt on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. First edition sets are not especially uncommon, but collector worthy sets are elusive. Sets of this caliber are quite scarce indeed. This set is compellingly clean and bright inside and out, near fine and about as good as we ever encounter. The contents of each volume are immaculate, improbably bright, clean, and crisp. We find no spotting, no previous ownership marks, and no age-toning. Clearly, both volumes are unread, as both volumes have as-yet uncut signatures throughout. The… Read More

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1942. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, first printing, first state of the second volume of Churchill's war speeches, containing 72 of Churchill's speeches, broadcasts, and messages to Parliament from November 1940 to the end of 1941, terminating with Churchill’s famous speeches to the U.S. Congress and the Canadian Parliament. Churchill's words during this time resounded during some of the darkest and most uncertain days of the war. This first edition, first printing is in very good condition in a good dust jacket. First state is confirmed by irregular spacing of the pagination at p.281. The blue cloth binding is square, tight, and unfaded, with bright spine gilt. Trivial shelf wear is confined to extremities. Description:
London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1952. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is Volume II only of the first edition, first printing of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, published during Churchill's second and final premiership. This second volume contains speeches spanning 25 June 1941 to 6 September 1943. After Churchill returned to 10 Downing Street in October 1951, the publisher reissued the seven War Speeches volumes as a new, three-volume edition. This edition is, in many ways, superior to the original seven wartime editions in both aesthetics and content. Gone is the cheap economy paper of the wartime editions. The binding is a heavy navy cloth with attractive, uniform dust jackets. The books each measure a substantial 10 x 6.25 inches. New speeches are added, as is a helpful index. Some of the original speeches considered peripheral are eliminated while others are retitled and chronological dates are replaced with brief transitional or introductory… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. This is the 1907 first one-volume unabridged edition of Winston Churchill’s biography of his father. This copy is more noteworthy for provenance than for intrinsic collectible value. The only previous owner mark in the book is inked in three lines on the front free endpaper recto: “Margaret Moss | Cowichan Station | B.C.” This book belonged to Margaret Johnstone Moss (1871-1937) of Cowichan Station, British Columbia. Margaret is noteworthy both for her accomplishments and for the fact that her history is substantially known – atypical for a woman of her time. During the Boer War Margaret was selected by the British Colonial office to work among the women and children in the concentration camps in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and was later put in charge of educational services there. It was likely here that Margaret met Major Claude Moss, then serving as the deputy assistant adjutant general of the Orange River Colony. They married Dec. 24,… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition. Paperback. This is a collector-worthy copy of the first edition, first state of this early collection of Churchill's speeches, housed in a handsome full green morocco Solander case. The People's Rights was most commonly issued in an exceptionally perishable form, in vividly hued, thin, yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and contents printed on cheap, pulp paper. Consequently, few copies survive, and significant wear, losses, and general deterioration are common to those copies that endure. Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is quite well preserved, being both an exceptionally clean, bright example and substantially complete. This copy is the first state of the first edition, confirmed by an Index rather than a second Appendix at pages 149-152 and a pagination error at p.71. The illustrated wraps retain strikingly vivid color and show no significant soiling. Despite some creasing, both… Read More

Description:
London: The Liberal Publication Department (in connection with the National Liberal Federation and the Liberal Central Association), 1904. First edition. Paperback. This rare 1904 leaflet publishes Winston S. Churchill’s letter in opposition to the Aliens Bill. Churchill's letter of 30 May 1904 was printed in the Manchester Guardian and published soon after by the Liberal Publication Department as this single-sheet, double-sided "Leaflet No. 2006" measuring 8 x 5.25 inches. The fight against the Aliens Bill was an important one for Churchill - providing opportunity for his first speech from the Liberal Opposition benches, burnishing his Liberal credentials as a champion of the disenfranchised, and ultimately scoring a political victory against the Conservative Party he had so recently abandoned when the Aliens Bill was defeated. This treatment of this copy is a curiosity. Condition is fine, bright and clean with no reportable loss, wear or soiling. However a previous owner decided to house it… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1938. First revised and expanded edition. Hardcover. This is the first printing of the first revised and expanded edition of Churchill’s much-praised collection of insightful essays about leading personalities of the day. This edition, published in 1938 soon after the first edition of 1937, added four new essays (Fisher, Parnell, Baden-Powell, and - of great interest – Franklin D. Roosevelt). As is the case with the 1937 first edition, first printing, the dust jacket for the 1938 revised edition is both elusive and desirable – in our experience, even more elusive than that of the 1937 first edition – and the binding quite prone to sunning and dulling in its absence. This British first revised edition, first printing, is very good plus in a flawed dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and only trivial shelf wear to extremities.
