Description:
np, 1976. 8vo, [24] p, saddle-stapled wraps. Photo-mechanically reproduced from typescript and diagrams, one of which is reproduced in color. The text of a lecture on the promises of solar energy given at the University of California at Berkeley by the groundbreaking biochemist, who won the Nobel Prize in 1961 for his discover (along with Andrew Benson and James Bassham) of the Calvin cycle. OCLC locates no holdings; the only reference we can discover to the pamphlet or the text is in Brinley Thomas' essay "Towards An Energy Interpretation of the Industrial Revolution," which cites a "mimeographed" copy, and notes 1976 as the date of the lecture, confirmed by a reference to the year of the bicentennial in the text. Very good with some moderate toning to extremities and minor creasing to wraps.

Description:
Bordeaux: Université de Bordeaux, Faculté Mixte de Médecine et de Pharmacie, 1960. 4to, 131 pp, printed on rectos only. Publisher's printed wraps. No illustrations. The results of a large scale study of 293 tattooed subjects at the notorious Charcot psychiatric hospital, and submitted as part of the author's work towards a degree at the Université de Bordeaux. Though the work prints no illustrations, the study is a remarkable primary document, and is also valuable for the very good 11 pp. bibliography which follows the text. Wraps lightly toned, with some light foxing to the edges of the text block. Near fine.

Lisboa: Livraria Guimaraes, 1903. First edition. 8vo, 270 pp, rebound at a contemporary or early date in marbled boards backed in red leatherette titled and banded in gilt. Original wraps not present. Illustrated with 13 photographs and drawings. Text in Portuguese. Previous owner's early and tasteful typographic bookplate to fep, as well as a small bookseller ticket (from Encadernador Alfredo David in Lisboa). Light smudging, toning and foxing within; boards well-rubbed and battered, with snags at the crown. A battered, worn, good only example, but complete aside from the original wraps, and scarce in any condition. The first edition of the first published book length study of Fado, "still a valuable source for fado historiography, especially when addressing the relationship between popular music and national character and how the vernacular was appropriated." - [Silva, p. 166]. Key to Carvalho's project was an examination of the career of A Severa, and of the taverns and underworld of the… Read More

London: Macmillan, 1894. 8vo, 321, [2] + 5 pp, bound in green cloth titled in gilt. No dust jacket. A reprint, in Macmillan's Colonial Library Series. Ex Libris Roger Casement, with his signature to fep: 'Roger Casement Cape Town June 30 1900'. Beneath this, the book is inscribed by Casement to his close friend Herbert Ward: 'To Herbert from Roddie at (indecipherable) 12 Aubrey Walk Campden Hill Rd Sept 12th 1900.' Written in Roger Casement's hand on the rep in pencil is the following text: "Those who only half live, remember can only half die. The rending of life from the has already been half accomplished."  A remarkable association copy with a brief, but unrecorded and poignant text by Casement. The two men had first met each other in the Congo, and became best friends, united by their concern for the abuses of colonialism in the Congo and other matters. Casement became Godfather and namesake to Ward's youngest son.  The second inscription to Ward, on September 12, came just after a time… Read More

Paris: Chamuel, 1897. First edition. 8vo, xxiii, 417 pp, wrappers typographically printed in black and red. Illustrated with a frontispiece photograph of Albert Poisson, and photographs of Papus and August Strindberg. With a preface by Papus. Text in French. First edition of this work on tarot and alchemy by the French occultist and editor of L'Hyperchimie. Castellot was heavily influenced by Charles Fourier, and was for a time a member of the SFIC (French Section of the Communist International) until he was excluded in 1922. Castellot was a devotee of the monadist philosophy Hylozoism, the belief that all matter is in some way alive, and this perspective underlies his work on alchemy, hermeticism, and spiritual communism. Today he is best remembered for being a mentor to August Strindberg, but his unique body of work is long overdue for a rediscovery and translation, in particular this unusual work, which attempts to outline the alchemical correspondences of both the major arcana and the suits.… Read More

The first edition of the first volume of the Chaos Computer Club's landmark hacking compendium - one of the most important of the early hacker books. Since its formation in 1981, the CCC has become the largest hacking organization in Europe and a a prominent force defending human rights in the digital age. The Bible is a hefty compendium of newsclippings and articles, alongside reproductions of the CCC's newsletter, Datenschleuder, as well as other hacking zines such as YIPL and Hackerpost. Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1980. First edition. Paperback. Narrow 4to bound in green printed wraps. An early state of this uncorrected proof, which contains the story "You Lay Down by Your Side," excised by the publisher from most copies. The published version of the book contained no mention of the story, and to our knowledge the story has not been published elsewhere in English. The title of the story is struck through in red pencil on the table of contents, and in one other place there is a sentence underlined in the same pencil. Quite scarce, and likely the first state of the proof; we've handled other copies of the proof which lacked the story, and this is the only copy of the proof we have seen with the story intact. Some soiling and staining to the wraps and edges of the text block, 1/2" closed tear to front panel at head of spine, sticker remnant from first blank, and a pencilled note to first blank describing the proof contents; about very good.
