Engraved title & several engravings & numerous woodcuts in the text. 8 p.l., 412, [12] pp. Folio, cont. half-sheep & marbled boards (minor worming towards end), spine gilt, black leather lettering piece on spine. Ferrara: F. Succius, 1629. First edition, Jesuit issue, and a very fine copy. "Perhaps the most significant discovery of the century following Gilbert was that of electrical repulsion. This effect seems first to have been noticed incidentally by Cabeus, who, in his Philosophia Magnetica (1629), describes how filings attracted by excited amber sometimes recoiled to a distance of several inches after making contact."-Wolf, A History of Science, Technology, and Philosophy, I, p. 303. Cabeo also relates his many experiments on the possibility of telegraphic communication by means of magnetized needles and gives the first picture of the sympathetic telegraph, an imaginary magnetic telegraph which sometimes appeared in early electrical literature, fancifully… Read More

Description:
74 folding leaves. Small 8vo., orig. wrappers (a little defective), orig. stitching. [China]: Siyin zhai 四印齋, [1893-96]. A collection of lyrics, a style of poetry with origins in folk music. As a genre, lyrics are associated especially with the Song period. Cai Songnian (1107-59) was born in north China under Khitan Liao rule but lived through the Jurchen defeat of the Liao and the invasion of Song-controlled North China in 1127. He served the Jurchen as a high official, writing poetry in the genre of the lyrics which were also popular south of the border. The book has a colophon by Zhang Rongjing 張蓉鏡 dated 1824 (Daoguang jiashen). Zhang explains that even though "the Jin held power for 110 years," very few books survive, especially collections of lyrics. Our book has a detailed running commentary by Wei Daoming 魏道明. The base edition of the text is said to be an incomplete copy (canben 殘本). Our book was published by Wang Pengyun 王鵬運 (1840-1904). Wang's studio name… Read More

Ten pages of manuscript illus. in the first vol. plus a number of graphs & tables in the text. 724 folding leaves. Eleven parts in 12 vols. 8vo (265 x 185 mm.), orig. semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: 1847. The most complete copy known of one of the two Japanese translations of J. N. Calten's Leiddraad bij het Onderrigt de Zee-Artillerie (Dutch eds.: 1832, 1842, and 1847). In the second quarter of the 19th century, Japan had an urgent need to update its artillery and learn more about the artillery of its international adversaries. Artillery had been used in the warfare that preceded the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate in the early 17th century, but with the advent of peace, such weaponry had been strictly controlled. In the early 19th century, the European powers became more active in the waters around Japan, seeking access to Japanese ports, and several armed encounters with European ships resulted. The shogunal government sponsored the translation of European works on… Read More

The very rare privately printed catalogue - issued in a few copies only - of one of the most important collections of manuscripts formed in 18th-century provincial France. Cancrin (1738-1812), was an engineer and high government official, both in Germany and in Russia, where he was recruited by Catherine II to manage the Staraya Russa saltworks. "Despite the press of his civil offices, Cancrin found time (1773-1791) to write an encyclopedic work in twenty-one volumes [actually it is 12 titles in 19 parts] that covered all aspects of the mining of metals and salt - including mineralogy, assaying, mathematics, and mechanics. This work brought him a European reputation."-D.S.B., III, pp. 41-42. [20] leaves. Small 8vo (178 x 115 mm.), orig. black printed dust-jacket, perfect-bound. Geneva, Switzerland: Ateliers Typographiques Héros-Limite, 1995. The very rare second edition of Carrión's beguiling bookwork composed of bound wallpaper samples, one of the artist's lesser-known books, due to its rarity. The 1973 first edition, published by the artists' space In-Out Center, was made in an edition of 50 numbered copies. The present work is one of 52 copies, 26 of which are lettered A-Z, the rest numbered 27 to 52; our copy is no. 42. This book is part of a series of re-publications that Juan J. Agius, an executor of Carrión's estate, undertook to replicate the increasingly scarce and fragile bookworks Ulises Carrión (1941-89) created in the 70s. Under the imprint of Editions Héros-Limite in Geneva, Agius produced second editions of Mirror Box (1st ed.: 1979), Looking for Poetry / Tras la Poesía (1st ed.: 1973), Arguments (1st ed.: 1973), and the present bookwork. Black & white illus. 25 pp. & colophon. 4to, black printed softcover, title on spine. Amsterdam: Galerie Da Costa, 1980. One of 500 copies, a scarce exhibition catalogue with an introduction composed by Carrión (1941-89). The catalogue provides a survey of Galerie Da Costa, a publisher of artists' books and livres d'artistes managed by Juan J. Agius. Agius published two of Carrión's bookworks: Verzamelde Werken (1980) and Sistemas (1983). Carrión writes: "This catalogue illustrates the publishing activity developed by Juan Agius, from Da Costa Gallery, during the last 4 years. Such an activity takes place in a cultural context that is already familiar with the production of books by visual artists, but where it has not yet been decided what the defining characteristics of this type of work are." [96] leaves, interfoliated leaves with manuscript notes identifying virtually all the participants. Folio (ca. 320 x 240 mm.), orig. color-printed covers, orig. black cloth tape over spine (small split to tail of spine). [Amsterdam: ca. 1973-84]. One of the most compelling books we have handled, and a truly remarkable discovery: Ulises Carrión's own guest book, a re-appropriated Tarzan children's coloring book. Throughout all the rapidly proliferating literature on the artist and his circle, we have not seen any mention of this precious book. Several of Carrión's friends have confirmed that he asked visitors to his home in Amsterdam to color pages during their stay. Dates written on some pages range from 1973 to 1984. Based on the achronological order of the dated colored pages, it seems these artists and poets could select whichever page they wanted for their interventions, be it with crayons or pen. Many have added short messages, jokes, speech bubbles and dialogue, their signatures, etc. A… Read More

Black & white illus. throughout. [16] pp. (incl. wrappers). 4to, printed wrappers, staple-bound. Warsaw: Galeria Remont, 1976. An extremely scarce exhibition catalogue published for Carrión's first exhibition at Henryk Gajewski's Galeria Remont. Gajewski (b. 1948), the Polish artist and filmmaker, founded this contemporary art space in a dormitory student club at the Warsaw University of Technology. The gallery operated from April 1972 to November 1979, hosting performance art, exhibitions of photography, stamp art, and bookworks, and many other events. This catalogue contains the artist's celebrated manifesto "The New Art of Making Books," which had been published for the first time the previous year in Plural no. 41 (in Spanish) and Michael Gibbs's Kontexts nos. 6-7 (in English). Galeria Remont became one of Carrión's most important international connections in the vast network of collaborators he formed. One illus. Single folded sheet (=[4] pp.). San Francisco: La Mamelle, [1981]. The program for the 1981 performance of 6 plays at La Mamelle, an artist-run space in San Francisco. Two fellow stamp and mail artists, Bill Gaglione and Darlene Domel, participated in this rendition of Carrión's work appropriating lines from six plays. Carrión first performed 6 plays in 1975, and in 1976 it was made into an artist's book with an edition of 100 copies. Interestingly, the program here, lists the plays in a different order from the book. Gaglione's alternate persona, dadaland, has contributed an illustration for one of the plays on page [3].
